Summary

In this bold and intimate memoir, Ariel Anderssen charts her journey from a strict religious upbringing as a Jehovah’s Witness to her current position as one of the most widely recognized BDSM performers in the world. Her route between the two includes a period as a wretchedly miserable, teenage political activist, a phase touring with a Christian theatre group, and accidentally discovering a talent for posing for art nude photography. This surprising and unconventional career path led her to a life-altering introduction to BDSM-themed erotic artwork and a whole world she never imagined existing.

This is a book about BDSM, and about sexuality, but most of all it is about one woman’s struggle for self-acceptance and the rewards that come from confronting who you are with honesty and compassion.

TRIGGER WARNING: this book contains descriptions of sexual violence that some listeners may find upsetting

"In Playing to Lose, Ariel Anderssen creates an erudite and witty insight into the world of BDSM modelling, but more than that, it is a deeply felt exploration of freedom: what it takes to be free, and what it looks like" (Ali Millar, author of The Last Days)

"Moving and heartfelt, an utterly brilliant whirlwind of a book" (Rebecca Reid, author of The Power of Rude)

"Often hilarious, frequently moving, sometimes disturbing and even harrowing, above all fearlessly honest, Playing to Lose guides us through a journey from repression to liberation that may well liberate the reader too. It’s a brave book by a brave writer, full of challenges and insights. Like all good writing, it makes us look again at things we thought we knew or took for granted, and to some readers it may reveal a world they never knew existed or one they hoped was real" (Ramsey Campbell, author of The Lonely Lands)

A beautifully striking story, beautifully read

I've been looking forward to this ever since I read the hard copy of 'Playing to Lose' upon its release last year, and it was absolutely worth the wait. Reading Ariel's idiosyncratic style of writing made and makes her personality jump right off the page, so I could hear her voice while reading her book, and listening to this audiobook sounded almost exactly like her voice sounded in my head, only better, funnier, and more charming. I was laughing mere minutes into listening to her read her story and was laughing throughout because Ariel's manner of storytelling is one and the same as her genuine, wonderful personality, and it is like she is there with you in person, talking to you and telling you her story.

Ariel's sense of humour is already evident in her writing, and her delivery of it here is like hearing her story anew, sparking new, vibrant life into her already vibrant and lively story and way of storytelling. Her already intimate story only gets more intimate with the audiobook because not only does her experience and training lend themselves to it (as you'll hear), but she is also a natural at talking, sharing and storytelling, so it is a thorough delight and a treat to listen to a woman who, long ago, felt like she couldn't use her voice to express her true self, read aloud the story of her true self with that very voice. A story of discovery and self-acceptance of more than just one's sexuality that has come full circle and has been shared with the world most fittingly.

Furthermore, even if you've already read the book, there is a bonus epilogue exclusive to the audiobook, making the experience a further joy and even more of a unique experience. The author is a role model for kinky and non-kinky people alike and the world would be an infinitely happier, more accepting and safer place with more people like her. She both figuratively and literally uses her voice to help others find and accept their own, and there is something in her story for everyone to relate to. Oh, also, her accents are GLORIOUS.

Fantastic Audiobook

The narration is brilliant and clear and it felt like I was there. Hilarious and sad at times as Ariel realises she is kinky and discovers she is not alone. I admire Ariel for expressing herself and making other kinky people realise that they are not alone. The bonus epilogue was also a nice touch.

Even better in her own words

Playing To Lose: The Audiobook, has done the impossible and made Ariel Anderssen's already incredible book even better. Ariel's writing style was so natural that it felt like she was there, beside you, telling you her story and now she literally is! The scenes become more vivid and more alive as Ariel can now put more of her emotions into her own words.
Her narration is clear and her personally shines true, giving you a great understanding and love for this amazing woman. It even has a bonus epilogue about her recording the audiobook, which means that even of you have the book, there is something extra to enjoy.
A fantastic audiobook which allows you to hear Ariel wherever you are, like in the car or making a chessecake and I am already looking forward to her next book.
