Summary

主人公に堀川保吉という男が登場する「保吉もの」と呼ばれる作品のひとつ。
芥川龍之介が海軍学校に勤務していた際の私小説だと言われている。

ある日、保吉が行きつけのタバコ屋に行くと、見たことのない女性が店番をしていた。なにかにつけて赤面し恥ずかしがる姿が初々しく、保吉は好感を抱く。
その後も店に立ち寄っては彼女をからかい、面白がっていたのだが、ある時から姿が見えなくなった。
そして保吉が彼女のことを忘れ始めた頃、たばこ屋の近くを歩いていると、店の前で誰かが赤子を抱えているのが見えた。

芥川龍之介（あくたがわ・りゅうのすけ）
大正期の小説家。1892年東京都生まれ。東大卒。乳児期から母方の実家で育てられた。
東京帝国大学在学中の1916年に第四次「新思潮」創刊号に発表した「鼻」が夏目漱石に絶賛され
文壇にデビューする。初期の古典を材料にした「羅生門」「芋粥」「地獄変」などの名作を経て、「点鬼簿」「歯車」など自己の周辺にテーマを得た作品に移行。
様々なトラブルで心身とも衰弱し、1927年に自殺して36歳の若さでこの世を去る。
没後、親友である菊池寛によって、芥川賞が創設された。
