主人公の刑事・藤木靖彦は、妻に先立たれた悲しみから立ち直りきっていない人物です。彼が配属された「警視庁　捜査一課　特命捜査対策室　支援係」は、いわゆる「コールドケース（未解決時間）」を扱う部署で、彼は、自分と同様な悲しみを抱えた被害者の親に出会うことになります。著者自身、「書きたかった題材をしっかり形にすることができた」と語る本作。生きていくなかで抱えざるをえない「別れ」と、その先にある「希望」を描いた本格的な警察小説になっています。
