M県Y市の名士・喜多川治良右衛門はY市の郊外に「ジロ娯楽園」という途方もない遊園地を作り上げた。 治良右衛門は数年前に父母を亡くし、自身は三十三になるが妻をめとることもなく、悪友たちと退廃的な日々を過ごしていた。

「ジロ娯楽園」にはびっしり植え並べた樹木で作られた大迷路があった。
一度入ったら一時間や二時間では出られない代物である。

ある日のこと、治良右衛門は例のごとく仲間たちと享楽的に遊びふけっていたが、治良右衛門の遊び仲間の一人である人見折江は迷路の中で断末魔の苦悶を思わせる唸り声を聞いた。
恐怖に震えて同じく迷路を彷徨っていた折江の恋人の大野雷蔵を頼るが、雷蔵は辺りの様子を探っている最中に、短刀を刺されて死んでいる治良右衛門の恋人・諸口ちま子を見つけた。雷蔵は折江にまだ中に犯人がいるかもしれないと警告し、戦慄する。

これが第一の殺人であり、娯楽園を恐怖に陥れる連続殺人事件のはじまりであった……。
