「ウルフトラッパー」は、先住民の中でも特に狩に秀でたアサバスカ族から送られた尊称で、狼を銃で撃つのではなく、罠、つまり知恵で捕らえる賢者を指す。年齢不詳、一人でテント生活をしているらしい男に、作家は徐々に親しみを覚えてゆく。謎めいた男が明かす極地の真実、また“五感の訓練”とは？ フィクションの愉楽に満ちた逸品。
