Summary

『山月記』含む「古譚」の一つとされる、中島敦の短編小説。

湖上で暮らしていた平凡な若者・シャクは、ある時遊牧民に集落を襲撃され弟を喪う。
その後彼はうわごとを言うようになり、周りにはシャクが霊に憑りつかれるようになったとの噂が広まる。
しかしシャクの体を借りて語る憑き物の話は面白く、聴衆を惹きつけるのであった。
そんな中、それは憑き物ではなくシャク自身が考えてしゃべっているのではないかと指摘する者が現れる。

中島敦（なかじま・あつし）
昭和時代前期の小説家。1909年東京生れ。東大国文科卒。
祖父は漢学者中島撫山、伯父にも漢学者が多く、父は中学の漢文教師。
1933年横浜高等女学校の教師となり、かたわら作家を志して習作にはげんだ。
持病の喘息悪化のため、転地療養を兼ねて41年パラオの南洋庁に赴任する。
唐代の伝奇「人虎伝」を素材にした「山月記」が深田久弥の推挽で42年2月の「文学界」に掲載され文壇にデビュー。同年5月発表の《光と風と夢》も好評で以後創作に専念。
パラオ南洋庁書記の職を辞して作家生活に入ろうとしたが、同年12月持病の喘息のために夭折した。代表作に「李陵(りりょう)」「弟子」「光と風と夢」など。
