大牟田敏清は教誨師の前に告白を始めた。今や自らと白髪の鬼と称する彼の半生は、復讐心に支配された苛烈にして哀しいものであった。

九州S市の子爵であった敏清は、父から受け継いだ遺産で何不自由なく暮らし、その財産に溺れて酒食にふけることもなく、真面目に暮らしていた。そして、無二の親友である川村と、美しい妻・瑠璃子に恵まれ、まさにこの世の春ともいうべき幸せを謳歌していた。

ある日のこと。近郊の地獄谷へ二人と遠足に出かけた際に、敏清が崖の上の岩に登ったところ、足元の岩が崩れて転落してしまい、死亡してしまう。
ところが、敏清は埋葬されていた一族の地下墓所の中で息を吹き返した。敏清はそこから脱出しようとして偶然に抜け道を見つけだすが、地上に帰還した彼の外見は白髪の老人のように変わっていた。

さらに、彼が知った真実は川村と瑠璃子が浮気をしており、自身の転落事故も川村が仕組んだものだという残酷なものであった。敏清は憤怒の情に身を焼かれ、二人への復讐を誓うのであった……
