14歳の《私》は父や母といっしょに山陽は尾道の町にやって来た。父は憲兵の軍服をまとい風琴を鳴らしつつ面白い口上で薬を売る、いわゆる《おいちにの薬売り》である。けっこうよく売れていたのだが、ある日・・・。貧しいながらに懸命に生きる姿が活写されており、そのままでおのずから感動的な作品に仕上がっている。『放浪記』第一章の続きのような自伝的作品である。田辺聖子という作家は、林芙美子の作品をひとつだけ読みたいが何をよんだらよいかとたずねられたらこの作品をあげると書いた。
