大正期に活躍した「新思潮派」の作家、芥川竜之介の童話。初出は「赤い鳥」［鈴木三重吉主宰、1920（大正9）年］。短編集「影燈籠」［春陽堂、1920（大正9）年］に収録。ある晩「私」が人力車で大森の外れに住むインド人「マティラム・ミスラ」を訪ねる。「マティラム・ミスラ」は婆羅門の秘法を学ぶ魔術の大家だった。昔話の話形、〈魔法昔話〉に諷刺をいれた物語。
