Zutiefst betroffen, wandelt er sich über Nacht vom boshaften Egoisten zum gütigen, hilfsbereiten Wohltäter, einem Muster an Nächstenliebe und Hochherzigkeit.

Charles Dickens, geboren 1812 bei Portsmouth, musste in seiner Jugend arbeiten, nachdem sein Vater ins Schuldgefängnis gekommen war. Neben seiner Arbeit als Reporter für die Zeitung "Morning Chronicle" fertigte er Skizzen an, die in Buchform unter dem Titel "Pickwick Papers" erschienen und ihn schlagartig zu Ruhm verhalfen. Es folgten parallele Arbeiten an verschiedenen Romanen sowie verschiedene Amerikareisen (1841/42 und1868). 1870 starb Dickens im Alter von nur 58 Jahren an einem Schlaganfall.
