About this listen

HBO’s hit series A GAME OF THRONES is based on George R R Martin’s internationally bestselling series A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE, the greatest fantasy epic of the modern age. A DANCE WITH DRAGONS is the fifth volume in the series.

The future of the Seven Kingdoms hangs in the balance.

In the east, Daenerys, last scion of House Targaryen, her dragons grown to terrifying maturity, rules as queen of a city built on dust and death, beset by enemies.

Now that her whereabouts are known many are seeking Daenerys and her dragons. Among them the dwarf, Tyrion Lannister, who has escaped King’s Landing with a price on his head, wrongfully condemned to death for the murder of his nephew, King Joffrey. But not before killing his hated father, Lord Tywin.

To the north lies the great Wall of ice and stone – a structure only as strong as those guarding it. Eddard Stark's bastard son Jon Snow has been elected the 998th Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, but he has enemies both in the Watch and beyond the Wall, where the wildling armies are massing for an assault.

On all sides bitter conflicts are reigniting, played out by a grand cast of outlaws and priests, soldiers and skinchangers, nobles and slaves. The tides of destiny will inevitably lead to the greatest dance of all…

Critic reviews

"In the grand epic fantasy tradition, Martin is by far the best...tense, surging, insomnia-inflicting." (Time magazine)

"An absorbing, exciting read.... Martin's style is so vivid that you will be hooked within a few pages." (The Times)

"The sheer mind-boggling scope of this epic has sent other fantasy writers away shaking their heads.... Its ambition: to construct the Twelve Caesars of fantasy fiction, with characters so venomous they could eat the Borgias." (Guardian)

Narrative a little disappointing 😕

Roy Dutrice has so many voices and accents and reads with such feeling.. His narration would be perfect if only he didn't change a characters accent half way through!! It really ruins parts of the story. Aria has suddenly been given an Irish accent ??? None of the other Starks have though ?? And Danares has also suddenly become Irish ?? It really is so annoying! I know there are a lot of characters but accents for families or areas should have been decided beforehand and a sample recording of each saved for reference in case there was any doubt.. I would have expected a more thorough and professional approach for the amount of money I have spent buying this series of audio books.

A good book, accents were all over the place.

Another great installment. How the changing accents got past production, I do not know though. I found the fact that Dany suddenly has the same accent as the Iron born very distracting. Many are unrecognisable from earlier books and some change halfway through the actual book.

great book

the narrator keeps swapping voices for the characters, understandable as there are so many but still a little annoying

Frustrating

I'm ready for this to end now. I can forgive Roy Dotrice' narration I am used to him and his quirks and wandering accents, he is rather old and after so many long hours listening to the books I feel strangely loyal to him.
I would like now a resolution, good or bad but at least to be left with a feeling of completion. Too many loose ends make my head ache!

excellent

Like all the books in the series this is excellent. Yes, Roy occasionally changes accents etc but to be fair it's weeks of reading for the old guy to have got it perfect would have taken forever. I find listening whilst cooking or doing other tasks relaxing and didn't have time to sit reading.

Fantastic...

The game of thrones audio book series is fantastic, I spend a great deal of time in the car and journeys seem to fly by with these on... On my third time round!!!
Yes there are a few errors... Some
Mispronounced words and names and I noticed a couple of the accents changes between books! But it doesn't detract much and is quite an undertaking to try and give everyone unique voices!

Wonderful audio

These books are terrific and the audio is wonderful. Could the chapter titles be included?

Good book but why the Scottish accents

If you could sum up A Dance with Dragons (Part One) in three words, what would they be?

Journey, Planning, Depth

What did you like best about this story?

Its moving the pieces on the board... The end game is not in sight.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Why could he just not read the book, his voice was rich enough. Why the Scottish accents was a mystery and was a distraction from the book....

Any additional comments?

Would love to get the Cast of the TV show to read these.. Would make it Epic..
Or even Peter Dinklage, Conleth Hill or Iain Glen on their own....

Worth listing to

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I saw a couple of episodes of Game of Thrones on the TV but then they moved to sky.. Left me wondering what would happen next.

So bought the first audible book and was hooked.

The book far surpassed the video .

What did you like best about this story?

The fact that I got totally engrossed with each and very part.

What about Roy Dotrice’s performance did you like?

Just great I had never listen to him before - but it was his performance that made the book for me

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes I just kept wanting to know what happen next - but had to do some work.

Any additional comments?

I'm now on part 2 of book 5 and I'm still hooked..
