About this listen

In the sobering yet hopeful years following the First World War, Lady Phoebe Renshaw and her lady’s maid, Eva Huntford, find their summer plans marred by an instance of murder....

Phoebe and her sister Julia are eager for a summer getaway at High Head Lodge, the newly purchased estate of their cousin Regina. But they are not the only houseguests. Regina's odd friend, Olive, is far from friendly, and Regina's mother and brother - bitter over the unequal distribution of her father's inheritance - have descended on the house to confront Regina.

In addition to the family tension, Eva is increasingly suspicious of Lady Julia's new maid. She questions Miss Stanley's loyalty and integrity, wondering why she left her former employer so suddenly. And why does Regina seem ill at ease around the maid, as if they were previously acquainted? Everyone, it appears, is on edge.

But things go from tense to tragic when their hostess meets an untimely end - mysteriously murdered in her bed with no signs of struggle. Now, with suspects in every room, Lady Phoebe and Eva must uncover secrets hidden behind closed doors - before a killer ensures they never leave High Head Lodge...alive.

A Devious Death

A well thought out murder mystery, with many potential killer's. It was great to hear how they worked well together to try and find out who had dune it. Read with brilliant characterisation by Mandy Weston.

Another excellent book in the series

I really enjoyed this listen. As in the previous books in the series, the writing is assured and the narration excellent.

A good romp

Obviously written by an American who gets lots of small things wrong. A police Constable in the 1910s wouldn’t have had a car at his disposal for example, there are lots of Americanisms in the speck of the characters too. What on earth is a shirtwaist? A shirt would not have had an attached collar like the one in the laundry had. The story is good but I found myself correcting things as it went along

a cosy whodunnit

a fun listen, with familiar tropes. I enjoyed the undercurrent of women's rights and the upstairs downstairs buts

Charm of the period well told

I have become a fan of this series. Narration, characters, and story are all most enjoyable. On to the next in the series.

Good story and narration

The narrator is great for this series. The historical enlightenment facts have also been interesting.

Undermined by the mis-framed political agenda

Could have been a cosy listen... except for the mis-framed and misrepresented political content.
Reminiscent of a couple of Christie books where the protection of the feudal system for the minority took precedence over the mystery.
If political change is to be used as a context for a murder mystery, try to do it well, and without agenda. Or irritation at the badly framed agenda, gets in the way of the narrative.

Unclear if this was written for the American audience, if so it would explain the rather extreme opinions around anything but a feudal social structure.
Shame.
The previous books were better grounded in context.
