Summary

One of The Times’ 25 Best Audiobooks.

HBO’s hit series A Game of Thrones is based on George R. R. Martin’s internationally best-selling series A Song of Ice and Fire, the greatest fantasy epic of the modern age. A Game of Thrones is the first volume in the series.

Summers span decades. Winter can last a lifetime. And the struggle for the Iron Throne has begun.

It will stretch from the south, where heat breeds plot, lusts and intrigues, to the vast and savage eastern lands, all the way to the frozen north, where an 800-foot wall of ice protects the kingdom from the dark forces that lie beyond. Kings and queens, knights and renegades, liars, lords and honest men...all will play the Game of Thrones.

Winter is coming....

Critic reviews

"A Game of Thrones grabs hold and won’t let go. It’s brilliant." (Robert Jordan)

"Colossal, staggering... Martin captures all the intoxicating complexity of the Wars of the Roses or Imperial Rome in his imaginary world...one of the greats of fantasy literature." (SFX)

"Fantasy literature has never shied away from grandeur, but the sheer-mind-boggling scope of this epic has sent other fantasy writers away shaking their heads.... Its ambition: to construct the Twelve Caesars of fantasy fiction, with characters so venomous they could eat the Borgias." (Guardian)

Great Story, terrible naration

A compelling fast paced story badly hampered by a really bad reading.

Many of the youngers charachters in particular are voiced as if they're in their sixties.

Have you got a strong constitution?

You will need a strong constitution to get through this excellent series of books. If you have watched the TV series, it is tame compared to the books. At first I hated the readers voice. He made even the gentlest child sound like a hatefull crone. Then I came to realise as the story went on that this was a cruel world being conjured, filled with pain, malice, greed and torture and that this was normal life there. I had to have a break from this story a number of times, sometimes for a week just to gather the courage to continue to listen. You, like me will probably be taken to the depths of dispair repeatedly, having all hope for the hero's dashed time and time again. There is also love and bawdy titilation from some unlikely characters that put finishing touches to this masterpiece.
Beware all ye who enter these stories!

Great and compelling listening

Some reviewers have criticised Dotrice's narration, but personally I am thoroughly enjoying it. Some great characterisation and pathos. It rolls along nicely and, having loved to televisation, I've loved hearing more of Martin's creation. Buy, listen and enjoy.

Questionable Interpretation!

Blood riders with sequentially Welsh, Cockney, then Yorkshire accents were a tough concept to swallow.

Great, but couldn't finish because of the reader.

George RR Martin's story is almost flawless. I ended up going out and buying the actual books, after purchasing this audiobook, but certainly not because of the performance of this reader. I'm sure he's very talented when given certain subject matter, but in this case, he falls short. I'd much rather he just read with one consistent tone, instead of trying to do an assortment of voices for all of the characters. He pronounces names wrong several times - sometimes after getting them correct previously. His voice for Khal Drogo, in particular, had me laughing out loud because of how silly he sounded.

Other than that, the characters created by GRRM are deep and compelling, the plot is engrossing and the detail the author goes into when describing locales and myth elements is very engaging. By this point, everyone already knows how great this series is, but rather than listening to this audiobook, I'd recommend you just go out and buy the paperbacks.

Great book - narrator could have been better

Great book. Not sure about the voices the narrator used and some of the inflections.

Superb book and narration

The book is incredible, and lovely to finally consume after watching the tv series. I don’t understand other people’s comments on the narration, a single narrator can’t have separate voices for every character but he adds depth to each one at point any times and it really immerses you. Incredible and will get the next one
