Summary
Max Skinner is a man at the heart of London's financial universe until his employers embark on a little asset-stripping of their own. Himself. Amid the grey London drizzle, there is one potential ray of sunshine: Max's Uncle Harry has left him his estate in his will, an eighteenth-century chateau and vineyard an hour's drive from Avignon. Out of a job, and encouraged by his friend Charlie about the money in modern wine, he heads for France. What Max discovers is a beautiful house, wonderful weather, and a bustling village. The downside is the quality of the wine in his vineyard; but when Max suggests calling in an expert, Roussel, a former employee of his uncle's, is resistant. Help is at hand, however, when a beautiful blonde Californian arrives unexpectedly at the chateau.
A Good Year won a Gold Spoken Word Award in 2004 in the Unabridged Contemporary Fiction category.

Addictive & Enjoyable
I managed to stretch this book out over 3 days (at a struggle), but could have finished it in a single sitting.
I work as a Sommelier, so it was great to find a good story with Wine at the heart of it.
The author has a fantastic way of setting the scene and making you relax as if you were in Provence as well.
Make sure you have a bottle if Luberon to enjoy while you listen

A Good Book too...
My friends and my long suffering husband have often put up with me shouting at the TV because they were showing a film that was nothing like the book. In this case I actually saw and really liked the film first. The book is very different but very enjoyable and as I already have recordings by Tim Pigott-Smith I knew I would not be let down by the performance. It is likely that had I read the book first I would have shouted at the tv which would have been a shame because I would have missed a good production, however the audiobook is well-narrated with very engaging characters and I will read and listen to it again and recommend it highly.

A Good Year. By Peter Mayle.
Charming, witty, unpredictable and thoroughly entertaining. Tim Piggot-Smith does an excellent job as narrator. One of those all too rare books you don't want to end.

When you need to relax this is just perfect
What did you like most about A Good Year?
In this book Peter Mayle delivers great fun, great characters and you can just relax and let your mind enjoy it. The plot is not huge, the pace is medium, you laugh at his descriptions of wonderful meals and the sybaritic parts of life but it's FUN.
What about Time Pigott-Smith’s performance did you like?
The performance is well paced and he gets the french right without being either patronising or silly.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I listened to this driving home from work over a week and it set me up for a relaxed evening.
