Summary

SOON TO BE A MAJOR TV SERIES

A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS compiles the first three official prequel novellas to George R.R. Martin’s ongoing masterwork, A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE.

A century before A GAME OF THRONES, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros…

Before Tyrion Lannister and Podrick Payne there was Dunk and Egg.

A young, naïve but courageous hedge knight, Ser Duncan the Tall towers above his rivals – in stature if not experience. Tagging along with him is his diminutive squire, a boy called Egg – whose true identity must be hidden from all he and Dunk encounter: for in reality he is Aegon Targaryen, and one day he will be king. Improbable heroes though they be, great destinies lie ahead for Dunk and Egg; as do powerful foes, royal intrigue, and outrageous exploits.

Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, and featuring more than 160 illustrations by Gary Gianni, one of the finest fantasy artists of our time, this beautiful volume will transport readers to the world of the Seven Kingdoms in an age of bygone chivalry.

Critic reviews

Praise for A Song of Ice and Fire: "In the grand epic fantasy tradition, Martin is by far the best...tense, surging, insomnia-inflicting." ( Time Magazine)
"An absorbing, exciting read...Martin's style is so vivid that you will be hooked within a few pages." ( The Times)
"The sheer mind-boggling scope of this epic has sent other fantasy writers away shaking their heads.... Its ambition: to construct the Twelve Caesars of fantasy fiction, with characters so venomous they could eat the Borgias." ( Guardian)
"Colossal, staggering.... Martin captures all the intoxicating complexity of the Wars of the Roses or Imperial Rome in his imaginary world.... The writing is always powerful...." ( SFX)

Fantastic

I struggled to get into the GoT books because of the perspectives and lengths, but because of the way these novellas are written, i found them easy to read in paper form and then bought the audible book to enjoy on the road too.

Fantastic for any fan of medieval fantasy and historic stories

Great story for ASOIF lovers

Really enjoyed these three stories, that not only are fun little tales with two great characters of Dunc and Egg, but a great insight into the history of Westeros. Harry Lloyd read it fantastically.

A humourous set of stories and wonderfully read!

A great set of stories with great humour and lovely turns and twists. I hope there are more to come for Dunk and Egg. They begin to feel like old friends. Really well read too. One of the most well read books I've listened to in a long while. Harry Lloyd does a wonderful rendition of each of the characters he reads of which there are many, and really picks out the humour in the novels and characters. I couldn't put it down and didn't want to miss a bit of any of the stories. Highly recommend.

Wonderfully written and narrated.

The story hooked me so quickly, and I found the story of Dunk & Egg both heartwarming and funny at times. Of course, this being a book by the great George R R Martin, the tale is bittersweet.

If you enjoy the world of A Song of Ice and Fire, this will no doubt be to your tastes, and may deepen your understanding of the lands.
