Summary
Philosophy begins with questions about the nature of reality and how we should live. These were the concerns of Socrates, who spent his days in the ancient Athenian marketplace asking awkward questions, disconcerting the people he met by showing them how little they genuinely understood.
This engaging book introduces the great thinkers in Western philosophy and explores their most compelling ideas about the world and how best to live in it. In forty brief chapters, Nigel Warburton guides us on a chronological tour of the major ideas in the history of philosophy. He provides interesting and often quirky stories of the lives and deaths of thought-provoking philosophers from Socrates, who chose to die by hemlock poisoning rather than live on without the freedom to think for himself, to Peter Singer, who asks the disquieting philosophical and ethical questions that haunt our own times.
Warburton not only makes philosophy accessible, he offers inspiration to think, argue, reason, and ask in the tradition of Socrates. A Little History of Philosophy presents the grand sweep of humanity's search for philosophical understanding and invites all to join in the discussion.

Interesting amd Thought Provoking
A very thought provoking book read very well. Many of these philosophers I have read and others I have not, so much pondering over the questions amd ideas raised when out walking. I would recommend it to anyone with an interest in differing opinions who wamt digestible chunks. I have listened to Philosophy Bites in the past and this supplements it very nicely.

A helpful snapshot
If you want to a brief overview of each philosopher this book is excellent. However, obviously some are more interesting than others, resulting in not all chapters being equally engaging. But an excellent overview nonetheless.

Enjoyed the overview of many great thinkers
Narration was good, liked the comparisons pitting thinkers against each other, and spans a wide range of notable philosophers from ancient to contemporary.

A little but informative introduction
There's so much information in this book about the history and development of philosophy. It is also well written and explained. Warburton uses simple examples to get philosophical points across. Enjoyable read, would recommend

Exactly what I needed
Fantastic book read in a simple language. Having grown up without any prior knowledge of the history of philosophy, it certainly provided the foundation for me to build on. Highly recommend it!
