Summary

Know thine enemy ...

Evan Warlow is a man with enemies. As a DCI in the Dyfed Powys force, that comes with the territory. But when two of his most vicious critics are abducted and turn up dead in a macabre tableau, tough questions need to be asked.

The uncomfortable answers lead Evan and the team back to his roots and an old case that has haunted him for years. The deaths in the forest have all the hallmarks of a dangerous killer with no fear of consequences. And when one of Evan’s fellow officers becomes the next target, it’s clear that the murderer isn’t finished yet.

There’s a coppery aroma of vendetta in the air. Unless Evan and the team can get to the root cause of the killer’s twisted anger, there will be more deaths. And guess who’s next on the list?

This dark murder mystery full of action and pathos with a dash of dark humour will keep you guessing. Perfect for fans of Line of Duty, JD Kirk, JM Dalgliesh and Simon McCleave.

Great story line with fantastic narration.

Compulsive story line made all the better by the narrator’s genuine Welsh accent, which really brought the characters to life. I felt as if he wasn’t just reading me a story but performing all the parts with the range of voices he delivers with ease. Amazing!

As for the story, I have been listening to the books in order and so far I think this is the best. The authors in depth knowledge of south/ west/ mid Wales is fantastic and I have lived in a lot of the places referred to, including Townhill where I was born and bred. When the estate was first built, it was recognised as a show piece in social housing, bringing an end to outdoor toilets, tin baths and cramped multi generational households. Those lucky enough to get a council house were very proud of their new homes and were the envy of many. My paternal grandparents were lucky to get one and it was kept like a palace. Later my parents managed to get what was termed a 2 bedroom cottage near Graiglwydd Square. It was a very different place in the 50’s and 60’s with a high moral code, strong work ethic and education focused, close knit, supportive communities churning out well educated university candidates as well as many talented craftsmen and women who didn’t make it to Grammar school . It was in the 70’s and 80’s it became a ghetto for troublesome families and it went into decline. My mam aged 93 still lives there in sheltered accommodation amongst people she grew up with. So if you are reading this Rhys, please don’t be too scathing of Townhill and its people. It was once a very good place to live.
That said, I really feel this is the best crime thriller I have listened to in a very long time and I listen to at least 2 books a week. I love the humour and the complexities of the plot but also the sensitive moments between man and dog and members of the team.
The plots are well thought out and demonstrate the authors in depth knowledge of life in these areas of Wales. I lived for a while in Ammanford in a beautiful idyllic spot looking up to Bettws mountain, during which time there was a siege in a small holding up the lane where a guy held his partner hostage with a shotgun. Within the same 3 year period we also watched an escaped prisoner being pursued on foot across the fields in front of our house by 4/5 uniformed officers.
I will end my review here as I have the next in the series waiting for me!!

chilling

well this one was a bit different in that it got very close to being quite scary at times. went bit soft and smaltzy at end but I forgive him that because I hate sad endings. we all know there are other books in the series so author does well to keep us worried and in suspense in case oEvan dies....well he can't can he or that would be the end of the series. anyway.....good story...good bit of humour and good ending. all it lacks is a bit of rumpy pumpy and it would be perfect. the jury's still out on wooden narration though and the pronunciation of certain words is totally wrong - sorry but it is a niggles for me.

I absolutely love this series of books.

This book, like the others in the series, is an original and exciting story. Told with a warmth and humour which engenders an empathy with the characters and a strong desire to know what happens next. This is a brilliant series and I'm really looking forward to the next.

More please!

A bit too much of the sadistic villain's thoughts and actions in this one, but I love Evan and dog Cadi and the team. Nice to have a Welsh setting rather than the inevitable deathly London setting. Seven more to record. HURRY UP AUDIBLE!

Really well written with great characters

I have listened to the first five in this series and really enjoyed them. I would love to listen to the rest of the series but they are not on audibles. Why is this? I can’t see to read so really upsetting to stop half way through a series

Best yet

Nearly had to pull over as I was listening in the car! The scenes are so vivid I was gasping not concentrating (note to self don’t listen to Warlow whilst driving) Thoroughly exciting and well narrated with the different voices for characters.
Make you mind up with the pronunciation of Iona though! Eye/Ona or Yonah or Yoner!!!
Love the way the development of the main characters is going. Look forward to the next ….

Use of locations

Great story as usual from this author, good narration, however, as in so many of these audio books the harsh stressing of the first A in the word address in the American fashion is mildly annoying. A very minor point and does not detract at all from the enjoyment of the listen
