About this listen

Costa Award winner and Guardian Prize winning author Patrick Ness delivers an extraordinarily moving novel about coming to terms with loss.

The monster showed up after midnight. As they do. But it isn't the monster Conor's been expecting. He's been expecting the one from his nightmare, the one he's had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments, the one with the darkness and the wind and the screaming.... This monster is something different, though. Something ancient, something wild. And it wants the most dangerous thing of all from Conor.

It wants the truth.

Powerfully heart rending!

Today, I have mainly read this.
It’s been on the pile for an inordinate length of time - but once I opened it I couldn’t put it down.
I see now why so many have recommended this story.
Beautiful, powerful, poignant, embodying all the rage, despair and sorrow that it needed.
And I am not going to lie - even though the outcome was always clear… the ending broke me.

Brilliant a must read!

I loved this book the way it was written and narrated was beautiful almost poetic while at the same time incredibly sad but yet hopeful! I recommend this book to everyone, so glad I read it! The performances in the audible app also were great especially the monster! We all have that fear but as much as we don't want it we need it.

Amazing book, very powerful and emotional.

I am going to start by saying what a fantastic book this was, the narrator Jason Isaacs really brought the book to life the way he betrayed the monster especially was excellent and his talent really shone through especially with this character. I am not going to say much but the book itself as I do not want to give anything away for future readers, although I am going to say is that I would highly recommend this book to anyone whether you are an adult or not, I know This book is officially meant for younger readers but I think adults can enjoy this book equally. I gave it a five star for everything because I felt the story it was good and handle a real situation in a compassionate way also the narrator was fantastic and displayed exactly the right emotions, overall I felt this book was very powerful and well worth the read. As a visually impaired listener, the narrator really brought it to life in the mind as specially at the end, I felt I was there with The main character, throughout the whole story.

A monster calls .. very moving

At first I thought this was very basic and meant for young readers/listeners but as the story got going I couldn’t stop listening . I found the whole story very moving and cried more than once! The ending when he had to tell his truth was exceptional to listen to .. brilliant.
