Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

An irresistable novel from the
Sunday Times bestselling author of Love Letters.

Sophie Apperly's family has never taken her seriously. Fiercely academic, they see her more practical skills as frivolous - whilst constantly taking advantage of her. So when her best friend Milly invites her over to New York, she jumps at the chance. It'll do her ungrateful family good to do without her for a while. What's more, she's on a quest - America holds the key to solving her family's financial woes, even if they don't deserve her help.

From the moment Sophie hits the bright lights of Manhattan she's determined to enjoy every minute of her big adventure. So when an evening at an art gallery throws her into the path of Matilda, a spirited old lady who invites her to Connecticut for Thanksgiving, Sophie willingly accepts, much to the dismay of Matilda's grandson Luke. Undeniably attractive but infuriatingly arrogant, he is very protective of his grandmother and seems to doubt Sophie's motives for befriending her. No match for the formidable Matilda, he eventually admits defeat, but first he has a proposal to make. He'll help Sophie in her quest to save her family from financial ruin if she repays the favour. But just what does she have to do in return...?

Definitely a Treat!

Sophie the main character is immensely likeable, capable and young. There is also a very endearing great uncle called Eric, I thought Jilly Bond was particularly good at doing his voice. Although it is generally well narrated, it is especially good on all the accents too. A Perfect proposal is a rocky road to love and certainly up to Katie Fforde's usual high standards. And although not quite as' perfect' as the title would suggest, this one is definitely a treat!

Had great potential but failed to deliver....

Jilly Bond's performance of voices was overall ok but mostly i found Luke's voice did bot match his character. The story over all seemed over stretched on some parts such as the first half in America while the second half in England was not given enough lime light. And the ending seemed far too rushed to my liking. I would have liked to see a proper character development for Sophie and more on her family as well. I feel like much of the secondary characters were more like embellishments or just there to take up space in the story. I was also disappointed to see that the plot was overall dropped towards the end from Sophie possibly becoming 'independent' to a typical damsel in distress rom-com heroine. Although its a romance it had potential to become so much more but ultimately it just didn't quite deliver for me. Would have preferred to see a much stronger heroine towards the end. In addition i didn't feel the chemistry between Luke and Sophie as much. Definitely not rememberable, both as characters or a couple. Over all an ok read, wouldn't pick it up again but if you like the 'naive-beautiful-belle-and-handsome-millionaire-get-together' troupe this might still be an enjoyable listen .

wonderful switch off

What did you like most about A Perfect Proposal?

I'm just out of hospital after major surgery and not able to do anything...this Perfect Proposal was frothy enough, almost believable enough, with great characters to allow me to switch off from pain and feeling sorry for myself, wasn't taxing and most importantly was entertaining...

Who was your favorite character and why?

Great Uncle Eric!

What about Jilly Bond’s performance did you like?

Her pace was good and her Uncle Eric & Cornish Monica characters were good fun

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Cornwall meets Connecticut

Voices

I mainly enjoyed the narration however Luke's voice is sometimes a bit annoying/ inconsistent. If you've enjoyed other Katie Fforde stories this is one for you.

Most irritating lead character ever

Gosh Sophie has never heard of empowerment or girl power. Neither has she heard of ageism given the way she talks of those older than her.

Narration is possibly the most irritating thing ever. Simpering and girly giggling does nothing to help Sophie appear empowered.

Swerve this
