Summary
An unique and intense tale following Elim Garak as he attempts to stitch the ravaged society of Cardassia back together.
For nearly a decade Garak has longed for just one thing—to go home. Exiled on a space station, surrounded by aliens who loathe and distrust him, going back to Cardassia has been Garak's one dream. Now, finally, he is home. But home is a world whose landscape is filled with death and destruction. Desperation and dust are constant companions and luxury is a glass of clean water and a warm place to sleep.
Ironically, it is a letter from one of the aliens on that space station, Dr. Julian Bashir, that inspires Garak to look at the fabric of his life. Elim Garak has been a student, a gardener, a spy, an exile, a tailor, even a liberator. It is a life that was charted by the forces of Cardassian society with very little understanding of the person, and even less compassion.
But it is the tailor that understands who Elim Garak was, and what he could be. It is the tailor who sees the ruined fabric of Cardassia, and who knows how to bring this ravaged society back together. This is strange, because a tailor is the one thing Garak never wanted to be. But it is the tailor whom both Cardassia and Elim Garak need. It is the tailor who can put the pieces together, who can take a stitch in time.

It's a miracle this audiobook exists
This book has been out of print for so long, and I, along with many many other DS9 fans have been desperate to get our hands on it. So to have it properly produced, and performed so beautifully by Andrew Robinson, is an absolute gift. I am so thankful this exists, but....
WHEN ARE WE GETTING A PHYSICAL RELEASE??? I want to hold this book in my hands! I want to put it on my shelf and display it proudly! There's clearly a market for it, so come on Star Trek and TAKE MY MONEY!

Fantastic
I thoroughly enjoyed this, it was a story I didn't realise I needed. Such a great enigmatic tapestry to draw on for Garak's back story. It weaves nicely between past and present events. It concludes with a couple of tantalising loose threads that will hopefully dovetail into a sequel.
Wonderfully narrated by the author.

Good audiobook
I think that this is a great audiobook but I easily lost my attention whilst listening. I think that I have to listen to it again to fully follow and appreciate the story. There was nothing wrong with this audiobook. The narrator was engaging and the storyline was quite lively. I just have to listen to it one more time.

Plain Simple Garak
As a huge DS9 fan and Garak being my favourite character this was truly a fantasic experience. The inflections and subtle notes from Garak can only be portrayed in voice by the magnificent Andy Robinson. This audiobook is a must for any DS9 fans

A listen to one of my favourite books
I bought this when it came out in paper back … what early 2000s maybe
And it a firm favourite on one of my favourite characters in the ST universe
Reading it I remember thinking this is exactly how Garek speaks and now with the actor himself doing the reading I can confirm it is
Altho his version of Odo isn’t bad …. His Quark is bad sorry Andrew
But yes it now remains still a firm favourite of mine …. This many years on
And I wish he brings out one more at least

Fascinating and One-of-a-Kind Tale
Andy Robinson knocks this one out of the park. Everything about it is fantastic. It isn't every day you encounter a novelization that so completely encapsulates a character. And not only that, but extends beyond the source material in such a thoughtful, intelligent manner. It's obvious Robinson is deeply invested in the character of Garak and this story exudes the sort of authenticity you rarely get in franchise media. This story truly is one-of-a-kind.
I absolutely fell in love with the deft way that the prose dealt with Garak's past, present and future. The glimpses into Cardassian culture before and after the war with the Dominion. Garak's training within the Cardassian State. His poignant friendships and rivalries. His early encounters with Federation officers. The light shone on ancient, cyclical mythology and the forebears of his people. All tied together and looking toward a future of infinite possibilities. So, so great!
Andy Robinson is heartfelt in his narration as well as his storytelling. Really just the cherry on top. Get this book!

The actor is amazing
Liked most of the book but it was missing oomph in the middle that would make you understand how good and scary Garak the operative was and why people fear him
