Summary

Detective Matthew Cunningham is haunted by ghosts. He spends his days skulking through Boston, lost in depression and angst. His wife loves him but cannot stand his darkness much longer. He needs to be given a direction to face and a problem to confront. And a problem does come.

A man's wife has vanished into thin air. The last time she was seen was disembarking a bus outside of Bangor. She was described as being in a trance, as if hypnotized, without shoes or proper clothes, and she was seen walking blindly into the dark and dangerous woods. The nearest town, nestled in those woods, is a mystery, isolated, rarely spoken of and often avoided.

The town is Nocturne, Maine, and to go there is to embrace madness and evil.
