About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

From challenging expectations as a bright and restless child of the Windrush generation to making history as the first elected Black female MP in the UK, Diane Abbott has seen it all.

A Woman Like Me takes readers through Diane’s incredible journey, painting a vivid picture of growing up in 1960s North London with her working-class Jamaican parents, before entering the hallowed halls of Cambridge University to study history. Ever since the day she first walked through the House of Commons as the first Black woman MP, she has been a fearless and vocal champion for the causes that have made Britain what it is today, whether it’s increasing access to education for Black children and speaking out against the Iraq war or advocating tirelessly for refugees and immigrants.

A unique figure in British public life, Diane has often had nothing but the courage of her convictions to carry her through incredibly hostile environments, from torrential abuse in the mainstream media and on social media, to being shunned by the political establishment, including by her own party. Written with frankness and wry humour, A Woman Like Me is an inspirational account that celebrates how one woman succeeded against massive odds and built an extraordinary legacy.

Feel the Fear & do it anyway Diane’s resilience & determination to speak her truth.

I was impressed by her openness, she did not hold back. This also gave me a greater understanding of the political world

Ground breaking

I loved Diane’s honesty and frankness about her life growing up and her journey to being an MP.
One of the few MP’s left who has stuck to their values and is unapologetic about her left wing views and how she supports her constituents.
Her voice is a bit monotone but for me that wasn’t an issue,it was the words she spoke that were so powerful.
I learned many new things listening to her biography.
One of the best audio books I have listened to in 2024.

Riveting read.

I pre-purchased this book on audible a good year before it was released. I love Dianes fierce bravery in the face of so much adversity. Such an inspiration. There were some laugh out loud moments in the book too, that I did not expect !

A remarkable woman

This was an inspiring book. Diane Abbott is a formidable woman, I enjoyed reading all aspects of this book from her humble beginnings, persevering academically and excelling, different sectors in her career and the trials and tribulations she faced being the first black female MP including the racism and vitriol she continues to stand tall.

Unsung heroine

Ms. Abbott has her say, and although she did not receive her flowers from her peers, in terms of acknowledgement, apologies, or a place in the house of Lords (Dame Diane Abbott, sounds more fitting) for her being the first black woman MP. She did receive an entire garden from her community and the recognition from her home country she wholeheartedly deserves, after a lifetime worth of work, and the racist death infused abuse she received from the opposition parties financial supporter.

Abbott is a champion of principles, causes, and civil liberties.

Ms. Abbott, you little, but you Tallawah!
