Sweet enough to give you a toothache
The story of Sori and Nathaniel picks up where Jenny and Jaewoo left us, with Sori facing some difficult thoughts around how she feels about potentially becoming an idol.
It was a good follow up to the first book, nicely balancing Jenny's girl next door with Sori's understanding of corporate power play while attempting to figure out what she wants and how to achieve her dreams. Also a very cool motif, insofar as we get a heroine that doesn't want to debut, and is trying her hardest to prove why she should be allowed to follow her own path.
There were some rather harrowing family relationships, which I think honestly portrays some of the darker sides of Korean culture and deference to elders, but ultimately Sori's relationships with her mother shine brightly and show that the family you choose is more important than the accidents of birth.
I didn't rate this as highly as XOXO on account of the difficulty that Sori had with talking through her troubles and what's going on in her mind, although Nathaniel was always open and willing to bear the load with him. It felt like high angst without a crazy need for it, but it was true to her character. Loved the genuine friendship between Sori and Jenny, though.
All in all, really nice. A gentle insight into aspects of Korean culture, positive relationships, and a happy ending. What more could you ask for?
