Summary

Alaska, the country on the edge of the Arctic. Dream destination for animal and nature lovers who follow the call of the fascinating wilderness. The land of bears, glaciers, pioneers and gold seekers on the northern tip of the American continent.

In Vancouver, the pearl of Canada on the Pacific Ocean, an extraordinary boat trip begins along the Alexander Archipelago to the Gulf of Alaska. A charming metropolis with a European flair. At English Bay, a giant metal crab guards the planetarium, and the Aquabus takes you over the False Greek to Science World with the "Glass Ball", which houses the modern technology museum.

The small town of Ketchikan is five hundred and twenty-six nautical miles north of Vancouver and was founded by the Tlingit Indians in the 1880s thanks to the wealth of salmon and wood. But today most people live here from tourism.

Since 1900, Juneau has been the capital of Alaska, the forty-ninth US state. In 1880, Joe Juneau, Richard Harris and their Tlingit Indian leader, Chief Kowee, found gold in Gold Creek and a gold frenzy began.

Glacier Bay, the "Bay of Glaciers", was completely covered by ice and glaciers around four thousand years ago during the so-called "Little Ice Age". The ice melted and the constantly changing glaciers are now only in the arms of the bay, which stretches almost a hundred kilometers to the north.

Barrow is the northernmost point of civilization in North America and five hundred kilometers north of the Arctic Circle. The living conditions in this arctic wasteland are extremely harsh and the freezing cold most of the year.

To this day, the dream of untamed nature and unlimited freedom attracts. The last wilderness in America. Alaska is full of extremes and contrasts and is still a fascinating land of adventure.
