Summary

From the award-winning author of Razorblade Tears and Blacktop Wasteland, perfect for fans of Don Winslow and Attica Locke.

A Black sheriff. A serial killer.

And a small town ready to combust.

Titus Crown is the first Black sheriff in the history of Charon County, Virginia. In recent decades, Charon has had only two murders. After years of working as an FBI agent, no one knows better than Titus that while his hometown might seem like a land of moonshine, cornbread, and honeysuckle, secrets always fester under the surface.

But a year to the day after Titus's election, a school teacher is killed by a former student. The student is then fatally shot by Titus's deputies.

As Titus investigates the shootings, he unearths terrible crimes, and a serial killer who has been hiding in plain sight, haunting the dirt lanes and woodland clearings of Charon. With the killer's possible connections to a local church and the town's harrowing history weighing on him, Titus tries to project confidence about closing the case while concealing a painful secret from his own past. At the same time, he also has to contend with a far-right group that wants to hold a parade in celebration of the town's Confederate history.

Charon is Titus's home and his heart. But where faith and violence meet, there will be a reckoning.

Good Stuff

"Violence begets violence, and all violence is a confession of pain! Hurt people tend to hurt people,"
Sheriff Crown

Cosby hits on social and psychological issues in our world without being preachy. He is good, good, good at what he does!

A bit heavy on the similes. A bit over the top, But a great read/listen.

Not a story for those overly sensitive to gore. But if you like Southern Noir, this is for you.

The FIVE STAR Narration seals the deal!

Brilliant Cosby as always

Waited with huge anticipation for S.A. Cosby's latest novel and it didn't disappoint! Outstanding narration from the brilliant Adam Lazarre-White as his honeyed voice gently lulls you and guides you through the story. Often you just have to pause, go back and re-listen to parts - it's that good. I was transported to a time, a place, a story, the characters and how they interact. Literature at it's best.

Magnificent story and narration

One of the best books I’ve listened to in a long time: lyrical, shocking and moving, with narration which more than did it justice.

A great new author to me

The story moved at a steady pace and was populated with strong, distinct characters… efficiently written, the narrator brought the book to life…. I will be seeking out more books by S. A. Cosby

deep Dark and fabby!

A great addition to this writers stable, and a wonderful piece of southern gothic addressing the often ignored dark heart of the south.

Good and Bad

And what I mean by that is that is a very good book about a very bad subject and I don’t just mean the serial killers but the overt/covert racism that still exists, superbly narrated

Great read and narrated so well

Really enjoyable. Maybe a little more gratuitously violent than necessary but a thought provoking read nonetheless

Very good

This is a riveting read, brilliantly narrated and evoking the American south with real skill. The plot is well paced and the characters are easy to engage with. I recommend this if you like a thriller with social and psychological insight.
