Så enkelt, men samtidig så tvetydigt begynder østrigeren Stefan Zweigs erotiske noveller, der var store salgssucceser i 1920'erne, men som blev brændt på nazisternes bål i 1930'erne. Novellerne foregår i det elegante Wien, det bjergomkrandsede Innsbruck, det tropiske Indonesien og ombord på passagerskibet Oceania. Men frem for alt foregår de i det menneskelige sind.
