About this listen
After almost five years of conflict, London's exhausted inhabitants are living in a world of dereliction. War-weary DI Ted Stratton is no exception, but he cannot help being drawn in by his latest case.
Called on to investigate when a doctor is found dead in Fitzrovia's Middlesex Hospital, Stratton soon realizes that someone involved is not who they appear to be. Meanwhile Jenny, Ted's wife, is working at the local Rest Centre. When a bombed-out woman appears at the centre, declaring that the man claiming to be her husband is an imposter, Jenny thinks that it must be due to shock. The reality, however, is far more dangerous....
Ultimately, for Stratton and Jenny perhaps there is only one thing they can trust: their fear.

Brilliant
I enjoyed every moment ... this author has captured the time and place of London in the 50s in fine detail.
All three books in this series are brilliant and totally memorable.

Really enjoyed this book
A very well written book which kept my attention. Never read this author before but really enjoyed this. Again as always the narrator was very good, which in my opinion is key in enjoying any audible book

Good listen - but start with 1st in series
This was the first 'Stratton' book I listened to and whilst the books really do stand alone perfectly well, if you listen in the right sequence there is more to be gained from the character and overall plot development.
There is the odd time when the stories do get a little manic but I found my attention was captured from start to finish - helped by the, as always, excellent narration by Sean Barrett (the reason I discovered Stratton in the first place). I await the 5th Laura Wilson audible with anticipation.

An excellent mystery set in interesting times.
I’ve just listened to this book for the second time, and enjoyed it even more than the first. I’m not usually keen on a detective novel that spends time with the policeman’s family, but this aspect of the book added to the story rather than distracted from it. I never cry at books but one particular scene was so moving, I did have to dab at my eyes with a tissue.
Highly recommended if you like your crime fiction character-driven.

Tragedy
An excellent , satisfying , but ultimately sad story in the wonderful Stratton series. I am at present revisiting the Stratton books, and this is as good as Stratton's War, if not better.
If only this series could continue, but like all good things, it appears to have ended .

Don’t Give Up
I was trying to return this book soon after I started it, as I was bored by the Mrs. Ingram section. I was unable to do so, and how glad I am that I continued on. Seán Barrett is a wonderful narrator.
The plot began to lift, and the characters started to ‘live’ under the skilful Mr. Barrett. The plot was convoluted, but kept me focused throughout . I won’t say more of the story, except that it was well written, with many surprises.

Cracking read.
I devoured every moment of this book and was catapulted right back to the conditions of the Second World War in London. The author magically weaves two complex story's which capture a range of human emotion and frailties. With murders, adulatory, impersonation the story moves along at a cracking pace.
I've not read the first novel but I didn't feel that that detracted from the story at all but I will read it just to get a bit more of the back story of DI Ted Stratton and family.
Of all the books I've read/listened to recently which are of this genre it's an absolute joy to find characters which show affection to one an other and don't have disfunctional family members.
I think this is my first book narrated by Sean Barrett and he brought all the characters to life superbly.
Well worth the credit and I'm so glad I found Ted :)

A very good sequel.
Any additional comments?
I like Detective Stratton - a "human" that is good at his job. I have to say that it would be nice, just once, to have a detective that had a superior that supported their actions and believed in their capabilities. However, as in the last book, the details and language of the time were wonderfully depicted. There was also a lovely twist towards the end.
