Summary
Sweeping, evocative and sumptuously told, An Unsuitable Woman is a dramatic coming-of-age story, a complex portrayal of first love and family loyalty and a passionate reimagining of the Happy Valley set in all their glory and notoriety.
Theo Miller is 14 years old, bright and ambitious, when he steps off the train into the simmering heat and uproar of 1920s Nairobi. Neither he nor his earnest younger sister, Maud, are prepared for the turbulent mix of joy and pain their new life in Kenya will bring.
Their father is Director of Kenyan Railways, a role it is assumed Theo will inherit. But when he meets enchanting American heiress Sylvie de Croÿ and her charismatic, reckless companion, Freddie Hamilton, his aspirations turn in an instant.
Sylvie and Freddie’s charm is magnetic, and Theo is welcomed into the heart of their inner circle: rich, glamorous expatriates, infamous for their hedonistic lifestyles. Yet behind their intoxicating allure lies a more powerful cocktail of lust, betrayal, deceit and violence that he realises he cannot avoid. As dark clouds gather over Kenya’s future and his own, he must find a way back to his family - to Maud - before it is too late.
Critic reviews
"With The Hunters, Kat Gordon has written a gloriously dark tale, packed with heat and glamour, and shot through with a fine, sharp edge. An absolutely compulsive read from beginning to end." (Liza Flausmann, author of Tigers in Red Weather)
"An outstanding achievement. This thrilling, evocative novel will transport and absorb you: brilliant." (Emma Chapman, author of The Last Photograph)

Substitute 'Unsuitable' with 'Unsavoury'
This is set in Kenya in the 1930's with the Happy Valley set. I picked it up as on the Richard and Judy bestseller list. The title has recently been changed from The Hunters.
This may be viewed as a switch off unchallenging perhaps beach read.
Could be read by the pool and totally keep up with the story while multi-taxing with children etc .
The author based some of the characters on real people but the narrator Theo and his sister Maud are imaginary.
This book essentially was unsavoury and unpleasant and sets out the sexual grooming of a 14 year old child by an older woman. What other reason would Freddie and Sylvie have to befriend a 14 year old child Theo?
Then even more unbelievable his parents while disapproving of this couple allow their child to go to dinner parties and on overnight visits unaccompanied with them.
Maud has an equally unbelievable story rejecting racism. A murder is thrown into the mix increasing the 'are you serious' factor.
To read this the reader has to seriously tackle the unsavoury child sexual grooming while suspending belief on what is realistic as to the overall plot.
The pace is so slow and as I expected ended badly.
The narrative was excellent and I would listen to another book by this narrator without problem.
Can you guess?? I would not recommend this

Richard Jack narrates this incredible novel utterly perfectly!
A fantastic listen! Kat Gordon has built a sensational narrative, bringing a bygone era alive so beautifully. I was immediately drawn into the characters and landscape of colonial Kenya - endeared and horrified by them in equal measure! Richard Jack is a gifted narrator. Wow, I could listen to him all day! Exceptional!
