About this listen

...And What Do You Do? is a hard-hitting analysis of the royal family, exposing its extravagant use of public money and the dubious behaviour of some among its ranks.

In this audiobook, former government minister Norman Baker argues that the British public deserves better than this puerile diet.

...And What Do You Do? is a hard-hitting analysis of the royal family, exposing its extravagant use of public money and the highly dubious behaviour of some among its ranks, whilst being critical of the knee-jerk sycophancy shown by the press and politicians. Baker also considers the wider role the royals play in society, including the link with House of Lords reform, and the constitutional position of the monarch, which is important given Prince Charles’ present and intended approach.

...And What Do You Do? asks important questions about the future of the world’s most famous royal family.

Critic reviews

"With our democracy in turmoil, it's right to be asking questions about constitutional reform. Norman Baker tackles the subject with his trademark energy and in forensic detail looking at the facts beyond the headlines." (Caroline Lucas)

Excellent book. Shocking revelations. They are even worse than I thought!

The book itself is well researched and well written. A narrator can make or break an audible book and this narrator is a success. Perfect for the book.

I am already a Republican (the UK sort of Republican). I dislike and despise everything about the idea of a monarchy and a Royal family and I think the people themselves as individuals and a family are truly awful.

This won’t convince the sycophants but those on the fence after reading this hopefully will become committed to ending this disgusting practice forever as well as consign all hereditary privilege to history.

I will definitely listen to this again.

Vive la révolution!

Excellent book by Norman Baker. David Vickery is the perfect narrator for the subject.

This book should be required reading or listening for everybody. I knew the royal family were fleecing us blind but had no idea as to the extent. I also had no idea just how much they can bend acts of parliament to suit themselves before they are passed.

It's time for them to go!

Excellent all round. Hugely informative. Measured.

Great narration. The brief interview at the end was an unexpected bonus. This has changed the way I think about the monarchy.

Oh dear oh dear.....

I enjoyed this book but boy did it make me angry. I should really stop listening to books concerning the Firm...in this day and age where we have so much poverty how can the cost of the royal families upkeep be right morally......

Andy’s golf outings, Charlies helicopter jaunts to go skiing.....the Queens skimming to keep the royal train running...all done on the back of the British people. Tis true the rich get richer and the poor well they get hungrier, ill, poor housing, ......

It’s a well written and well read it’s the subject matter that makes me boil...

very good!

realised that I knew more about American leadership history than I did English so listened to this - this book was very informative and IMO didn't force the republican argument hard enough to alienate anyone!

Revealing insight into costs etc of the Royals

Enjoyable listen with lots of info I was unaware of. Very biased against the Royals but plenty of information to consider. Overall a valuable read which tended to confirm a few thoughts I had about the Royals originally with plenty extras added.
The book was well read and wisely the author decided to pass this onto someone else. The interview at the conclusion of the book was valuable and nicely rounded things off.

Just outstanding work!

If you have just watched Netflix's the Crown and were wondering, was it too harsh on the royals? Well this will give you a definitive answer. Brilliantly written and performed. Get it.
