Summary

Would you have a baby for your daughter?

Ruth has the life she always wanted—stellar career, loving family, beautiful home—but now, with an empty nest, and heading towards 55, she feels restless. Then her daughter is told that she will never be able to conceive, and Ruth discovers that, with the right dose of hormones, she could carry a child for her daughter.

At first Ruth is buoyed with a new sense of purpose, but her daughter can't contain her corrosive envy, and then long-buried secrets from the past resurface. What begins a simple gift becomes something darker and more complicated—and something for which Ruth is willing to risk everything....

A truly insightful novel

A riveting read superbly read by the narrator upon a subject most of us will never experience but after reading, will never again dismiss as just a generous act. The means to the end brought out the utter selfishness of the whiny, baby deprived daughter and her clumsy dogged spouse. An insight into the best and worst of human behaviour. But what a read!!

Good listen

I enjoyed “ Surrogate” very much. It was well written, thoroughly researched and beautifully narrated.
The only criticism I have was the “voice” of Lauren, the daughter. For some reason I took a dislike to this character and my opinion never changed throughout the book. Whether this was due to the narration, or the way the character was displayed in the story I’m not sure but could have been a bit of both. Either way I found her irritating and unlikeable. Overall, however, I can highly recommend this audiobook.

Thought-provoking

Once I’d got past the characters all being super successful (and hence not that relatable unless you’re a barrister or tv producer) I became completely invested in the characters and their journey. As a woman of a certain age, Ruth’s story really resonated with me. All aspects of having a woman’s body are covered in this book and are laid bare - the good, the bad and the ugly. The narration is outstanding.

The best novel I've listened to this year.

This is one in a million. A psychological page-turner that had me gasping in places.
An insightful portrait of complex characters. And a scrupulously honest exploration
of fertility, ageing and womanhood. Beautifully written and beautifully
read. I loved every single word.

Great story, well written, brilliant narration

This is a great story with well-drawn characters. And wonderful narration as always from Juliet Stevenson. Highly recommend.
