Hospital Chaplaincy are the paramedics of the spiritual support spectrum

I wasn’t sure what impact this book would have on me as a psychotherapist who has been on the outskirts of other people’s grief professionally and personally. Park brought the work of the chaplaincy into sharp relief; it is a tough role to walk alongside the patients and their family in their darkest hour. He brought the patient’s experiences to life and powerfully demonstrated the things that can be well meaning but unhelpful. He gives reader warnings about the content of each chapter and after listening to the author’s insights in the initial chapters I took them seriously and used my judgement on which chapter to skip past for my own self care.

Park is a man who very generously has given us a window into his life and the journey he has taken dealing with personal trauma and the impact of vicarious trauma. Listening to the author’s voice was the element that helped me to feel I could trust him on this walk into highly emotive and often avoided territory. This was the book I needed at this time and I will be recommending it to my friends and colleagues.
