Summary

London. A city drowning in fog. Amid that fog, a man with no name dies above a strange junkshop. Threads of mist and intrigue weave around a court case with no resolution, linking great country houses with the lowest slum in the city, mingling the high-born with a boy who sweeps the filthy streets, enshrouding devious plots and sudden murder, bringing together two extraordinary women – Lady Dedlock and Esther Summerson - who seem to have nothing whatsoever in common but who will find themselves inextricably linked.

Audible's trilogy of Dickens dramatizations, executive produced by Sam Mendes, and with a new original score by Dan Gillespie-Sells, concludes with the most dramatic and atmospheric yet, starring Thandiwe Newton (Westworld), Ambika Mod (One Day), Mackenzie Crook (The Office) and Mark Strong (Kingsman).

Bleak House

I loved every second of this Production. I could not stop listening. I hope that another Dickens book could be recorded by the same actors. Janet from Kent

The casting, the reading, the humanity, the atmosphere, the fog. It was just brilliant. That’s it!!

Not a bad adaptation but not perfect

I love bleak house and worry about new adaptations being off script and too modernised. This does a lot right - some of the acting is excellent, It told a complex story well and the sound and music was not too distracting from the story. However if you’re a stickler for adaptations being faithful to the original story (which I am!) then you will find many holes. Lots of characters missing and it deviates from the original story in parts. My biggest gripe was Esther’s accent. It was played in a modern London style constantly not pronouncing her t’s and in a modern twang. Just felt very out of place to the story and the time setting. However i would say it’s still worth a listen, just don’t take it too seriously.

Unusual adaptation.....

Decent performances from the various characters of a story which only approximates to the Dickens original. Not necessarily for Dickens fans but hopefully it will coax a younger generation to engage with the original novel. There are some excellent narrations of the unabridged original in Audible!

Enjoyable from beginning to end. I felt like I was in the streets of Dickensian London. Excellent cast.

An excellent adaptation, beautifully performed

This dramatisation of Bleak House is sensitively adapted and beautifully performed by all concerned. It manages to make the plot modern and relevant, without damaging Dickens' plot and the diversity of its cast adds to its richness.
