Summary

Please note: contains explicit content.

Get ready for a completely improvised and unscripted Audible Original that invites you to listen in on the funniest phone calls from the world’s weirdest town.

“Welcome to South Grampers! Please enjoy our world-famous movie theater butter, and kindly stay away from the glowing toxic waste.”

Ever been on a terrible conference call where nothing gets solved?

Stuck on hold trying to cancel your cable service?

Lonely and needed to talk to a friend? (Even if they’re a cat?)

Bad Reception is an entirely improvised comedy, set entirely on the phone. A cast of over 40 top comedians and improvisers brings to life (and completely makes up) the story of South Grampers, Northern California – the Movie Theater Butter Capital of the World.

The town is in dire straits and must launch their own film festival to raise some desperately needed cash. But an unexpected sequence of events ultimately leads to an event known as…The Incident.

Only one person can solve the mystery and expose the terrible truth. He just doesn’t know it yet.

A hit and miss sketch show

This is effectively a sketch show, about the oddball inhabitants of a small town. The semi improvised sketches are intentionally silly, featuring highly eccentric characters. A loose plot links the scenes together.

At its best, Bad Reception made me laugh out loud. However, the tone and quality are both highly variable, with some very weak episodes.

Rather strange, but strangely compelling

I'm still not sure. something made me listen to the series but I'm not sure what. if you've ever heard of Chickenman on US radio it's a bit like that, but that's all I can say. "movie butter???"

So funny (and the ep numbers are fixed now)

This is so funny! I enjoyed it more and more as it went on. Several of these comedians are great guests on Comedy Bang Bang & other podcasts, and the whole cast was great here, I loved all the unique characters they created (although occasionally it was hard to keep track of them all). The improv is quick-witted, often silly and surreal, and so much fun to listen to. I hope we get more.

NB. At first several eps were labelled with the wrong numbers as another reviewer mentions - but that's been fixed now so definitely don't let that put you off.

Highly entertaining

This great if you just want to pass the time with a smile on your face. For a show completely improvised it’s very clever.

Good but spoilt by being in the wrong order!

After taking a little time to get into the somewhat over-the-top craziness that the actors came out with, I enjoyed the story. However, the whole thing was somewhat marred by the fact that the episodes are incorrectly labelled and therefore out of order.

For example, I'm up to what is labelled to me as episode 12 of 13. This episode is labelled "The Film Festival", but in the intro it called itself F-U-blank-blank Funny" which for me is labelled as Episode 8 (which I have already listened to, and to my knowledge contained no reference to this (though another earlier episode made a passing remark about it), though I imagine this episode will).

Another example of how this has affected me is that the climax (and indeed ending, complete with Audible's sign off credits) of the whole series happened about 6 episodes in for me, which at the time I thought was very odd, but I carried on anyway (up till then, the episodes did seem to be vaguely in order, though there were lots of bits that seemed very irreverent), and it was only when the whole thing seemed to go back into the past following that episode that I realised they were incorrectly labelled.

So yeah, I think if the episodes were labelled correctly and in the right order, it'd be certainly more enjoyable but also possibly a little less random. Now I know its improv so a degree of randomness is to be expected, but now I'm listening to the later (which are *actually* earlier!) episodes I'm seeing that what I thought was just completely randomness (like the passing reference to F-U-blank-blank Funny I have mentioned) is actually a callback to a previous episode, but because they're out of order for me, I didn't get them that way.

I don't want to give a bad review for the actual audio show itself, because I imagine if Audible could actually label the episodes correctly and play them in the right order, it'd be great, but I do feel the need to warn others of the issues here, so that's reflected in the "overall" score.
