Not one of my favourites
To be honest the relationship between the two protagonists is starting to get a bit on my wick by this point!

Terrible narrator!
I love Val McDermid’s books, but Saul Reichlin’s narration is so so bad! It’s really hard to listen at times.
He makes sense to narrate a scandi noir series, but not a series like this set in Northern England!

still not keen on the narrator
Loving the twists and turns but hearing Sauls accents can really grate.... top tip... if you want Saul to sound Asian tell him the character is Welsh 🤣 and his East London/Cockney sounds like something out of Mary Poppins guv'na! Overall I can tune him out and hear the story so I will continue to listen as the 'will they won't they' element is still keeping me guessing and I'm enjoying finding out more about their pasts. Very cleverly woven tales of two crimes, even if it is a little far fetched in places its still a great story.

Great storyline
Love the storyline and the growing workings of the new team.
What I don’t get is Carroll’s change of believing in Tony and just dis missing his ideas very offhand this also happened in the last book. Feels unbelievable really When she believed him at other times in the past. Feel like that need sorting.
Also this whole thing of Tony not being human that’s a bit needy this far in referring to himself in that way. Not really very clear why he feels he has to refer to himself. Why can’t he just be a guy who can get into their heads. Anyway brilliant story lines you will enjoy this one

Different plot!
The plot was different and although I have not heard the previous books, I got the 'background' of the characters.

Good story but narrator can’t do regional accents
I have come across thi narrator before performing Swedish/Danish stories and for these, he has excellent accents.
Mancunians, Birmingham and Liverpudlian accents in this story were dire.
Story is good although I would question why we bother with a police force when psychologists can do the job so much better. Perhaps psychologists are more expensive?

A well written but rather unlikely story
Val McDermid's books are always readable and this was no exception. If you know the characters from other books in the series you will find this a comfortable read (listen). This one has more details about Tony Hill's trouble's childhood, in case you are interested. As for the story itself, I found it pretty unlikely, especially the unlikely "romance". No spoiler so won't write more on this.

A comedy 'Tour de force'
A brilliant story as always from Val McDermid, probably one of the most enjoyable for plot and characters.
BUT
The narrator and his bloody awful comedy accents. Marvel at his Cokerney, gasp at his Liverpudlian and stare disbelievingly at your speaker at his Black Country copper. It is only because it is such a strong story that this didn't ruin it completely. I found myself longing for an Asian or gay character to make an appearance just to marvel at Saul Reichlin's acting skills.
