Winner of the Best Unpublished Manuscript of the Wilbur Smith Adventure Writing Prize

1853, Victoria, Australia. Five bushrangers led by the murderous outlaw Warrigal Anderson raid a small homestead. When they ride away, 19-year-old Toby O'Rourke's life is changed forever. His parents lay dead at his feet and his brother, Patrick, is badly wounded.

But Toby O'Rourke is made of steel forged in the hardship of colonial life. Forced into adulthood, he and Patrick will seek to restore the family fortunes and outwit not only the rich businessman who conspired to rob them of their birth right but the vicious men who murdered their parents....

Loved it. No crazy story lines. Just a lovely story very well told. Hope Bill Swiggs writes more.

Good old yarn down under. Recommended.

Great debut novel in the style of Wilbur Smith and Philipp Meyer. I look forward to reading more from this author. Recommended.

Blood sweat and dust

Liked the story although for some reason it took a while to settle into it but once into it I felt the pace picked up too.
Nothing too much by way of twists or turns but a well written and ultimately engaging story nevertheless.

A little predictable

The main character Toby was just too good and just too predictable. The female characters were hardly defined. In general, I felt that this book would be a reasonable first novel and would hope that the author improves with the next book. Sorry.

Brilliant

It was a great pleasure to spent more than 12 hours with this audiobook as I liked all of it: good pace of action, real characters and background of the novel. Good narrator also contributed. I strongly believe it is great material for multi -episode TV series.

Meh

Interesting concept but a bit obvious in its narrative. Definitely not a classic, and the characters are pretty dull.
