Summary

My name is Winter Wayne, and I'm a Bone witch - minus the magic.

I used to work in the only place in Manhattan that had use for a witch with very little magic - like me - until my boss kicked me out over a job gone bad (not my fault, I swear). Pure boredom and the lack of company got to my head fast. I was so desperate, I took a delivery job from a complete stranger. It was supposed to be an easy job, clean and simple. It was anything but.

Now, there's a price on my head, and my own coworkers are hunting me down. My mad fighting skills alone aren't going to be enough to keep me alive. Looks like the time has come to dig out my mother's bones and complete the ritual that will finally ignite the magic in my bones - if I even make it that far.

She never wanted me to be part of the paranormal world, but she made sure I was prepared for it anyway. I'm finally about to find out why.

Emotional rollercoaster

The protagonist behaved so annoyingly irrational and impulsive. It was almost frustrating at times. However, it is also interesting to read how the protagonist just progressed driven solely by emotion.
The narrator was excellent.

In this world (mostly) teen fantasy

Some interesting twists, slightly cliche romance but enjoyable, easy listening. Well matched narrator. Probably best suited to adolescent/young adult readers

Fast paced but does get repetitive after a while

This is a solid 4-stars Fantasy book.

I couldn't give it the full 5 stars because it does get a little repetitive after a while. Especially the romance scenes... Those are more than predictable, often crossing into cliché-territory. The fight scenes also tend to repeat themselves after a while. Still, lots of surprising ideas and turns, which does keep it interesting.

Perfect performance!

Damaged heroine

The story revolves around a female who has had a hard life and who comes into her magic through force of circumstances. Thereafter her actions are inexplicable as she rejects her heritage, the intense love she apparently feels for someone - even wanting to kill him for apparently lying to her. The violent and sociopathic reactions of the heroine are disturbing!

Couldn't finish it

Ok, it's rare I give out an unfavorable review, I try to be fair so let's see...

The heroine, Winters, starts out as a tough (if slightly dim) character. there is plenty of action in the first half, even if it feels a little forced in places. It kept me listening wondering where the threads of the story, buried but there, would lead.

However, half way through the book the main character changes. while the author tries to make her sound... scrappy is probably the best word, low on power but tough, when she does get power behind her she changes. Before it was 'I may not have much but I can handle myself' suddenly became 'why me? it's not fair! I don't want to do this anymore! '

Normally I like character growth, some of my favorite books are ones where the character faces struggles but overcomes them with effort. Here, the character discovers her true self and it causes her to sulk like a teenager.

speaking of, some of the romantic dialogue felt... well... shallow. The sort of thing a... yes ... sulky teenager might think about a guy she's crushing on, not a young woman in her mid 20s.

but I said I'd be balanced so... positives.... the author wrote a book! it got published! they wrote several more! that's good.... right?
