Summary

When an old man is found viciously murdered, a swastika carved in his chest, the obvious conclusion is that this killing must be racist. Suspicion falls on the son of the local doctor, found in flagrant playing sex games surrounded by Nazi paraphernalia.

A taste of rural France

I do enjoy this series. The books are interesting on many levels and the characters in them are engaging and varied. Well thought out stories with different threads and dimensions. I love the inclusion of the taste of French life.

Charming and quaint

Makes you fall in love with France whilst providing insight into life in a small town and old sins which come back to haunt people. The narrator has a soothing voice and brings the characters to life. And there are the great recipes for authentic French farm cooking. Meet Bruno local Chief of police working on racist murder case that is not what it looks like... enjoy.

Atmospheric

Rather involved story, but very well researched. I learned a lot about the wartime events in France. Gentle and sympathetic, Bruno is a lovely character!

Beautiful!

What a delightful story and beautiful narration. Lovely description of the little French village life, and smells, and sounds and tastes. Good gentle pace and fascinating plot.

Note- I have seen some negative reviews and I think that they must be for a different book.

Ok .... ish!

A rather feeble tale, well told and very well narrated. Bit tame although mildly diverting. You could never call it 'gripping' !!

Exceptional book, top quality narrating

A very interesting book about a small town, and a murder of an Algerian War Hero. Great book, keeps you interested and entertained all the way.

Good story

Great use of facts and history to tell a story which could well be true. My only, very slight, disappointment was the use of a rather uneducated voice for le capitaine Duroc who, as a gendarmerie officer would have graduated amongst the top candidates at St Cyr and so one would have expected him to have a more patrician accent.
