Summary

Lieutenant Sam Bitka, US Naval Reserve, is getting used to civilian life when he is called back to active duty. Tensions between Earth and the alien Varoki are on the rise, and Sam is assigned as tactical officer aboard the deep space destroyer USS Puebla. Dispatched to the distant world of K'tok to protect human colonists, he wants nothing more than to serve out his active duty time and get back to his civilian life.

But when the Varoki launch a crippling surprise attack against the Earth coalition fleet, Sam finds himself suddenly in command of the USS Puebla, a job he is far from certain he can discharge successfully. What's more, mounting evidence points to a much larger and more sinister alien plan.

Now, Sam must deal with faltering leadership in the human task force and an alien enemy who always seems one step ahead of them. Time for Sam to step up and rise to the challenge of command.

Great fun

Really enjoyable story with a likable hero. Some nice twists and a bit of depth to all the characters. Do read it!

Impressive

And catching story, full of breathtaking action, the rise of a true hero and the people around him, seasoned with the obligatory cowards, with nepotistic ties to power and rank.

Already bought the second audible book!

Like loads of people I get emails about 2 for 1 and various other sales, so saw this and thought I’d give it a try and was delighted, the story flows well and keeps the listener entertained, with battles, plots and more.

Unexpectedly brilliant

After a slow start, I got rapidly drawn into this well paced, intelligent, world rich story. The technical aspects were particularly well done, and continually developed throughout the story. The characters are varied and nuanced. They demonstrated the best and worst of human and alien alike. The narration was excellent. I look forward to more in this series if they are available.

Space warfare, down and dirty

Lots of technical detail without being overbearing - I'd classify this as hard scifi. Captivating story and relatable reluctant hero. Solid plotting and dialogue.

I gave up..

Gave up.. Story was ok. Narrator was dreadful. Monotone and uninteresting. I struggled to keep interested. Pity. I should have sampled the book not just read the description.

Actually very good

Much better than expected. Nice mechanisms for explaining things to the listener. A healthy number of deaths. Great narration. Very good

Enjoyable romp

Simple but enjoyable space battle fun.

I liked the main character and the supporting cast which kept me engaged.

Narration was fine, though a few voices were essential the same for multiple characters, but didn’t really affect the flow so not an issue.

An enjoyable story.

I didn’t think I would like the book but I am a gluten for space opera. I was surprised, finding myself listening deep into the night. So yes well worth a listen. I noticed, that like all American authors; they portray their officers as corrupt and self serving. Is this reality flowing through? Lol. I’m sure there is a reason. I’m British so we tend to glorify our officers and leaders even if the truth is far from reality. Take Churchill, we ignore his involvement in India…. Back to the book. Yes I think it is worth the purchase and yes I will buy the next one. Anyone reading this and undecided, take a risk, you won’t be disappointed.
