The addictive new thriller in the San Diego Case Files series, from Sunday Times bestselling author Karen Rose.
Homicide Detective Kit McKittrick finds herself standing over a dead body in the Shady Oaks retirement centre. Frank Flynn has been stabbed and his room ransacked.
Though he kept his background quiet at the centre, Kit recognises Frank from the San Diego Police Department. Had the former detective been following a trail that led to his murder? When the head of security is also found dead, it points to a conspiracy right at the heart of Shady Oaks.
The one person who might be able to help uncover the truth is just who Kit has been avoiding: Dr Sam Reeves. As a volunteer at the centre and a friend of the victim, the forensic psychologist could be just what her case needs.
But without access to CCTV of the day of the murder, how will Kit catch her killer? And can she do so before anyone else is put in danger?

They seem so innocent....but are the most evil
Kit once again finds herself face to face with Sam as a heartbreaking case hits a little too close to home for both of them. A confusing case with too many bodies and not enough evidence, each answer found only brings up more questions. Nothing is as it seems, everyone has secrets and Kit finds she has....feelings!
I really like Kit, she is a little broken, has a lot of baggage but is an amazing person fighting for answers and providing protection in a dark and draining world. As much as I think Sam will be amazingly good for her, I also like that Kit is wary about beginning anything with him. Yes, she is scared, terrified actually, but she doesn't want to mistakenly hurt him and that is very endearing. However, as much as I like Kit, I love Sam, he has the biggest heart, more patience than anyone I know and is a protector in his own quiet way. My heart hurts for him as he helps the residents, the staff and the police navigate these tragic murders whilst dealing with his own grief too. I really LOVE that he and Kit are finally getting closer, his patience has been rewarded with her trust as he slowly breaks through the walls she has built.
A fantastic series and I look forward to more.

An enjoyable read.
I enjoyed the story overall but it was obvious very early on who the criminal was. However, it was very interesting listening to how Kit, Conner and Sam put it all together And the two elderly female characters are especially interesting and feisty. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the book.

Favourite book in a while
Loved this story line and the characters, both developed really well throughout the story. Have read all of the Karen Rose books and this one didn’t disappoint.

Enjoyable but
An enjoyable story picking up for last book ( although it can be read as a standalone) but not the very best of Karen Rose and the narration was not my favourite!
