Summary

A magical weapons master just might be the key to saving the continent from a deadly plague; if only she didn’t have to romantically entangle herself with a dangerous fae leader to do it.

Rose has kept her head down and life private for the last ten years, making weapons in the remote northern village and staying away from the world of the Compass Points. Running from her past seemed like the easiest way to deal with her pain. When a representative of the Suden Point, the leader of the earth fae, comes looking for a magical weapons master, her secrets may start to unravel.

Deadly and determined, Luc needs Rose’s skills to help fight a mist plague overtaking the continent.

When the plague hits too close to home, Rose must decide her fate. Continue to run from her past? Or go to the one place she swore never to return, Compass Lake.

A romantic fantasy in a world inspired by United States National Parks. Fans of Emily Wilde’s Encyclopedia of Faeries will love this enchanting new fantasy series with enemies to lovers, fake dating, and elemental magic.

Compass Points by Jilliant Witt

☆☆☆.5

Audible copy graciously provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Compass Points is the first book in a soon-to-be series of the same name, with the second book set to be released this summer.

When Rose, a secretive weapons master with the ability to imbue magic into her craft, is visited by a dark and handsome fae male, she can't think of a single compelling argument to convince her to create the magical weapon he is seeking; refusing to be dragged back into fae business again. But when the mist plague that has been spreading across the land finally catches up to her and takes the life of someone she loves, Rose is left with little choice but to embrace her fate, accept the fae males help and return to Compass Lakes once more.

This was a nice, quick listen with a good narrator on the audiobook. Billed as romantasy, this story focuses on the swiftly forming bond between main characters Luc and Rose as they embark on their quest to stop the mist plague. Consequently, I did find other characters in the story to be quite superficial, adding no real depth to the plot beyond humanising the protagonists. The only exception to this seemed to be Rose's magical sidekick Arie, whose main role seemed to be to add some levity or comedic value to the narrative when it wasn't filled with light banter or heavy flirting between Rose and Luc.

For me, what let this book down slightly was the way plot points were revealed. Despite the story being presented as a quest, many of the answers were effectively dumped into our laps, lacking the mystery and suspense of a big reveal. Other answers were simply not given at all. Rose tactlessly reveals things to Luc, despite a decade of secrecy, and it turns out that Arie, as evidenced by his soliloquy towards the end, had all of the answers all along. This book has clearly been designed to set the reader up for the next instalment, with very little explanation given for the events that lead to this book and a whole host of new questions that require an answer in the sequel. I guess Rose and Luc will be heading off on another 'quest' in book two.

An enjoyable fantasy romance

The storyline in this book is good. I think the idea of focusing the magic around the points of a compass was completely fascinating and not something I’d seen done before.

The characters are great and I enjoyed reading about them. I’d like to get to know them a bit deeper and I hope some of that comes in the next book.

It’s got a great fan-ro formula and executes it well. We have an enemies to lovers romance, a unique magic system, gods, animal familiars and a mortal enemy. I loved it

The audiobook is great. The narrator does a great job at capturing the essence of the characters. I would have loved for it to have different narrators for the multiple povs but this narrator did a fantastic job nonetheless

I would wholeheartedly recommend you listen to this book
