About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
'I was at a time in my life where I got to thinking more about people's choices – how everything would be different if just the slightest decision changed...'
It is late September in 2001 and the walls of New York are papered over with photos of the missing. Cora Brady’s father is there, the poster she made taped to columns and bridges. Her mother died long ago and now, orphaned on the cusp of adulthood, Cora is adrift and alone. Soon, a letter will arrive with the offer of a new life: far out on the ragged edge of Ireland, in the town where her parents were young, an estranged aunt can provide a home and fulfil a long-forgotten promise. There the story of Cora's family is hidden, and in her presence will begin to unspool…
An essential, immersive debut from an astonishing new voice, Confessions traces the arc of three generations of women as they experience in their own time the irresistible gravity of the past: its love and tragedy, its mystery and redemption, and, in all things intended and accidental, the beauty and terrible shade of the things we do.
‘A remarkable debut. A complex and compulsive read that unravels the intricate twists and revelations among three generations of women with elegance and urgency.’ Miranda Cowley Heller, bestselling author of THE PAPER PALACE
'CONFESSIONS is a beating heart of a novel, intricate both in its weaving and its unspooling. An irresistible read.' Yael van der Wouden, Booker-shortlisted author of THE SAFEKEEP

Epic Irish women’s story
I listened on 1.0 but think it needs to be 1.2. I have the book on library hold and think it will become clearer then. Good narrators, although one is very turgid probably deliberately. Lots of themes, clever style and structure but I could see bits from others books coming up. Will probably win prizes but also be accused of being over hyped. Just a bit too much going on and could be shorter.

Fabulous debut!
What a wonderful book. I was instantly gripped with this. I loved the different narrators and was intrigued with the story. I was sad when it was over.

A bit confusing
This was a well thought out debut novel. However, I find it a bit confusing at times. The plot moves back and forth through time and characters. I had to stop at one point and work out in my head who exactly this part of the story was about. I also found the details of the Screamers a bit vague. At no point was the actual history of purpose of the Screamers divulged. I ended up having to Google it myself to find out what was being discussed. it was enjoyable but a bit dark and at times depressing.

What an unbelievable debut
A wonderful debut and family saga female led. I really enjoyed the way this book unraveled and all the perspectives the author chose to voice the book. This is really enjoyable. And a great listen. Finally no one needs to read infinite jest or the catcher in the rye.
