Summary

Ding-dong merrily on the village green!

This Christmas, Petra longs to play Fairy Godmother, not the back end of a panto donkey.

When her surly Shetland Pony is fired as the nativity procession’s donkey, Petra Gunn agrees to find a last-minute replacement to lead out the village carol singers. It’s that or bending over and walking two steps behind her husband in a pantomime costume.

Local equine vet Gill Walcote knows of a small herd owned by rare breeds farmer, Robbie Marlborough. There’s just one catch. Gill and Robbie were once briefly engaged. It didn’t end well; they haven’t spoken in over thirty years.

As Petra races to secure the village carol singers a long-eared mascot in time, she sees an opportunity to heal past wounds. But does she also risk fanning old flames?

Return to Compton does not disappoint

Love that this series celebrates good relationships of all kinds. I particularly appreciate Walker’s efforts at diversity.
For me, this series stands alone as properly horsey for those who might be more interested in that aspect than the romp-fest that usually accompanies horsey reads.
Ps one of those rare times when “read by the author” isn’t a red flag. A perfectly balanced performance that is engaging and dynamic but doesn’t intrude too much on the listener’s imagination and none of those terrible attempts at imitation “male” voices that you so often get!

Disappointed

I’m a big fan of Fiona’s books, but this was a big disappointment sadly. Certainly not helped by the narrator (I’m sorry Fiona, but please leave it to the narration pros). Unfortunately the narration on the last two books was disappointing also. I just find it so hard to follow, with many characters sounding alike and I’m never quite sure who is meant to be speaking.

The story felt rushed and hurried, confusing twists that weren’t needed…. I feel rather cheated for using a credit on this short and journey-less novella.

I love the comptons, I love the characters. But I struggled with this short story, and poor narrative style.

Difficult to listen to

Usually a bit fan of Fiona Walker but I found this difficult to listen to as the accents for the characters were hard to distinguish between. I didn’t find the story particularly enthralling either. Disappointed really.
