Summary

Desensitized and detached from the worldly goods that fall before her, Mai finds herself in a position of great fortune and opportunity being raised as the only child in the respected Zhang family. The story takes place in 1970s China; the backdrop is scenic and vivid; bustling marketplaces and sprawling metropolises. The contrast of this beautiful imagery is the dirt ridden underworld of crime bosses, hired thugs and crooked politicians.
