About this listen

Strathbran, Scotland.

A village steeped in folklore and impenetrable mists and a horrifying mystery. . .

Martha Strangeways is struggling to find purpose in her life, after giving up her career as an investigative reporter when her young twins died in a house fire. Overwhelmed by guilt and grief, her life changes when she stumbles across the body of a missing teenager - a tragedy that turns even more sinister when a poem about crows is discovered inked onto his back. . .

When another teenager goes missing in the remote landscape, Martha is drawn into the investigation, teaming up with DI Derek Summers, as malevolent rumours begin to spread and paranoia grows. As darkness descends on the village of Strathbran, it soon becomes clear that no one is safe, including Martha. . .

Started well

The first 20 or so chapters were good, the plot was coherent, the characters interesting. By the time I got to chapter 40 I was beginning to think it was too long. By the time I got to chapter 60 I was just wanting it to end. The plot had lost all consistence, it was a catalogue of unbelievable actions and I was skipping chunks to get it finished. Not for me.

Just fantastic!

I loved everything about this debut novel by Suzy Aspley. It is a fantastic atmospheric and eerie gothic thriller. I love books with a hint of the supernatural and this one, set is a small Scottish community, is filled with stories of witches, rituals, black crows and Scottish folklore, as well as a murderer on the loose. I really enjoyed Suzy Aspley's descriptive writing which really helped me picture the small community and the forest.

It grabbed me right from the start and really did send shivers down my spine. The fear really is palpable. It is fast paced and as the Crow Moon (the last full moon of winter) appears the tension really ramps up and Martha has a race against time.

Martha is a fantastic character, with a sad backstory, and she is a strong, determined woman. I believed that this book was a standalone but I am thrilled that it is the first in a series, so look forward to meeting Martha again.

Fantastic First Novel

Well done Suzy Aspley! What a brilliant novel.

I couldn't stop listening to this book, I loved the gothic current running through it, the descriptions of the area and the characters. I felt the pain Martha had endured and questioned who was the killer right until the end. I can't look at crows in the same way now and am really looking forward to the next novel.
