About this listen

An assassin falls for the archduke she was sent to kill, but killing him might be the only way to save his soul.

Magic has two immutable rules - every spell requires a sacrifice, and every curse can be broken.

Amira Brindonu is a sorceress turned assassin, bound in a curse that forces her to obey her father, even to the point of high treason. When he orders her to kill the future emperor, she fails, but discovers a secret that could bring the whole of the empire to its knees.

The archduke is stricken by a curse that could sentence him and his people to damnation, but Amira could be the only key to breaking it. In a desperate last-ditch effort, the archduke takes Amira prisoner and makes a pact to protect her from her curse if she will help free him of his own.

As time begins to run out, Amira soon learns that there are enemies that blades can’t touch, and there are fates worse than death. Caught in a web of sorcery, intrigue, and her growing feelings for the archduke, the assassin must decide just how much she is willing to give to save the only man she’s ever loved.

Every curse can be broken, but can two cursed people save each other?

Beauty and the Beast meets The Witcher in this fantasy romance that is sure to delight fans of Sarah J. Maas, Kristin Cashore, and Leigh Bardugo.

Great story, lovely storytelling

the plot is wonderfully devised and it's incredibly refreshing to hear the author voice her own characters

Slow start but burn stesdy

It had a slow start for me at least. But then it gets into it. Read by the author herself it's nice. But sometimes I notices repeat things after each other the same sentence maybe it is a recording error.

A very fun, interesting and beautifully paced story

Followed the author via tiktok due to some skits and learnt of this series that way. I am not disappointed.

We waste no time getting to know the characters, world and relationships. Blissful compared to some fantasy I have recently finished.

The only negative is Wheatleys performance reading the book. Though clearly a talented author, her delivery lacks drama and emphasis where needed.

This does not take away from the story however and I do recommend this book.

A good story, but the performance is grating

The story itself is quite engrossing. A tad predictable, if you have read things like Throne of Glass, but the characters are entertaining. the narration is really frustrating though. Pausing in random places, some very dodgy pronunciation and a quite robotic voice at times made it quite a tough listen at times

the romance makes sense!

I was very happy to find that the romance is exactly as thought out as I had heard. It''s expected to be a big part of the book but I hardly ever get to enjoy a relationship theme in a fantasy setting where the attraction between the characters makes sense. some parts were still puzzling, though, but that's just me being aroace. nonetheless, enjoyed the book whole heartedly! I can't wait to listen to the second book!

Very promising but needs polishing

I felt like the author really loved the characters and that made me love them too. The story is promising but it definitely needs more details and less action, some interesting plot hooks.

It's not often that we see authors narrate their books and here we have an interesting case - I absolutely loved the unique perspective the author could give us - different voices and creative pauses created depth to the narrative and insight into the different personas... but... some voices were very hard to understand by a non-native speaker.

All in all, I like it.

Great world building

The story is good, sometimes the performance was too monotone, especially during dialogue. it didn't always convey the corresponding emotion

Listen at 1.2x speed, but definitely listen

I liked this story a great deal, and though the narrator is slower than I prefer and uses a couple of unusual pronunciations (perhaps they're just the American pronunciations?) the story is more than worth overlooking that. A romance featuring a decent male love interest, in that he is a decent man who isn't soft or cruel, and a lady who is literally cursed to obedience but finds loopholes to rebellion? I'm in. The side characters also provide enough intrigue to keep me interested when the focus is on them, and the descriptions of settings are rich without feeling overcooked.

I thoroughly recommend this book.

A gripping story

I really liked the depth of the characters and truly enjoyed how the plot progressed through plot twists I did not anticipate! The narration is slightly stiff but honestly that felt kind of like when my parents read to me when I was young, it ended up being very soothing. I finished the book in two sittings and immediately got the next part- I need to find out more about this world! It’s so well fleshed out with interesting points for the universe’s history, religion, and magic system.
