Summary

Once I was a fae princess with sea-magic at my fingertips. Now? I’m a hunted supernatural in a squalid shop, stripped of my power. My only comforts are stale cookies, Elvis records, and my hula-hoop. Then a lethally sexy fae king arrives and rips even those away.

After the brutal king throws me in prison, I strike a bargain with him: my freedom in exchange for helping him find a magic blade. What Lyr doesn’t know is that the blade might restore my stolen magic.

But as we journey, the gorgeous jerk starts to make me feel things I’ve never felt. When Lyr touches me, desire ignites. I see raging passion in his eyes too. If I give in, I risk losing my chance at reclaiming my power…and, even worse, I could be forfeiting my life.

Good book, grating narration

The book is pacy, sexy and fun. Unfortunately the narration is almost unbearable. The narrator is good at character voices but has chosen a nasal, almost monotone pitch for the protagonist, which is so grating I had to turn down the volume. Unfortunately the narrator only seems to have one British male voice in her repertoire so it’s hard to distinguish male characters, and that voice would be best used for depicting a stuffy, dull uncle in a Victorian drama - NOT hot for our otherwise very appealing male lead. If you can bear the narration the book is well written and enjoyable. Solid plot - interesting characters.

A 3.5 Star Read.⭐️

This was an enjoyable read. I am unsure if I like Lyr, though.🤔 I'm definitely not a fan of the knights. Aenor grew on me, and I liked Gina.😊

I'm uncertain where book 2 will go. I'm hoping the story will be more cohesive than this one.

Better to read it rather than listen!

I’ve managed to listen to 30 mins of this audiobook then gave up. I’ve never heard such a poor narration. Story itself is solid and quite enjoyable despite the noticeable lack of background. As if the author assumes that you know all about fae, it’s history and main characters relationship. I usually love Crawfords books but this kinda let me down. Maybe narrator just put me off so much that I was discouraged from the start. My advice is- sample the book first- not many will manage to listen to the most annoying voice in the world!

Definitely worth a read! A mature ACOTAR

I was torn whether to give this 4 or 5 stars, but in the end since I only give 5 stars to books I absolutely ADORE and would die for, I had to only give this 4. Though I have a feeling that I’ll be giving the next books in this series more.

The narrator’s English accent is bad, but I tried (successfully, I think) to ignore it and I managed to enjoy the book anyway. She could have been far worse.

Shockingly bad narrator

Overall the story was enjoyable, however it was lacking in character and world building. The relationship between the two main characters went from Anor hating her captor, to them suddenly wanting each other, with no real reason for this to happen, due to them barely building a relationship with each other. This made the romance aspect of this book was very disappointing, as I do like to see a relationship develop with tension and suspense, so that you get invested in the characters and their developing attraction. This book really didn’t have any of that.

However the worse thing about this book was the narrator!!! As with the other review the narrators male voices were all the same and all a nasal stuffy, monotone old man voice. The voice she used for the main male character did not reflect how he was described and did not conjure up a sexy fae Demi God, it made u think of some stuffy Prince Charles like person. I do not believe that if the author heard this characterisation of her main male lead, she would be saying yes that’s exactly how I imagined him!! The narrator absolutely ruined any of the enjoyment I may have got from this book and I would not listen to anything else that she narrated as I find that she is a story killer!

Like I said this is not the best story in the world and there are a few flaws in it, but I suggest reading it rather than listening to it and then you might find it more enjoyable than I did.
