Summary
Don't Miss the Original Series Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan Starring John Krasinski!
Tom Clancy delivers a #1 New York Times bestselling Jack Ryan novel that will remind listeners why he is the acknowledged master of international intrigue and nonstop military action.
It is The Campus. Secretly created under the administration of President Jack Ryan, its sole purpose is to eliminate terrorists and those who protect them. Officially, it has no connection to the American government - a necessity in a time when those in power consider themselves above such arcane ideals as loyalty, justice, and right or wrong.
Now covert intelligence expert Jack Ryan Jr. and his compatriots at The Campus - joined by black ops warriors John Clark and “Ding” Chavez - have come up against their greatest foe: a sadistic killer known as the Emir. Mastermind of countless horrific attacks, the Emir has eluded capture by every law enforcement agency in the world. But his greatest devastation is yet to be unleashed as he plans a monumental strike at the heart of America.
On the trail of the Emir, Jack Ryan Jr. will find himself following in his legendary father’s footsteps on a manhunt that will take him and his allies across the globe, into the shadowy arenas of political gamesmanship, and back onto U.S. soil in a race to prevent the possible fall of the West....
Please note: This is the abridged edition. An unabridged version is also available.

Been a long time!
I started listening to the unabridged version of this. I have never listened to nor read an abridged book, but two hours in I remembered why it’s been so long since I read Tom Clancy books. I loved his earlier books (which I read, I’m new to audiobooks) Cardinal of the Kremlin, Hunt for red October etc but they became far too detailed. So I returned it and got the abridged version. Gasp! Actually sacrilege in my opinion!
It may be testament to the researchers (may be he did it himself), maybe it was just his interests, maybe it was all fiction but whatever, I really didn’t want nor need to know for example the minutiae of how an engine (or whatever) worked, I know enough to take care of my car and I just want to be entertained when reading/listening to fiction otherwise I’d read manuals. So I think the stories were excellent but too much chafe. It sounds like I’m being horrible, he’s clearly very clever but I read a lot of reports and reference books (which l enjoy) for work but in my own time I just want escapism and entertainment. So I think with Clancy’s (et al), only, it’s going to be abridged all the way!
And I did enjoy it! So I wonder what happened in the other 11 hours!

Classic Tom Clancy Action
I bought 'Dead or Alive' as I am going on holiday in a few months and wanted to have a few books stocked up to listen to on the plane and on the beach.
Unfortunately within 3 days of buying the audio-book I'd listened to it all. I just wanted to listen to the first bit to check it was downloaded OK but then I was hooked.
In terms of the actual plot and characters, it's typical Tom Clancy, if you've enjoyed the Rainbow Six and other 'Ryan' books you'll enjoy this one. It's very much the same but different.
It's gritty military/spy fiction - probably not going to win any prizes for the most cunning twist in the tail but it's very easy to listen to, particularly if you don't want to get bogged down in the detail about if things would really happen like that in real life. From memory in previous books the accuracy seemed to be a bit better - particularly on bits that were central to the plot.
There's a whole host of things that are just a little bit technically inaccurate but after all it is supposed to be fiction. For Example - There's a bit about fake aircraft transponders that was a bit iffy.
Overall an absolute classic Tom Clancy plot that I found difficult to put down. Some of it a bit far-fetched and in some places a bit predictable but nevertheless very entertaining fiction with a decent enough smattering of real events/capabilities/places to keep you interested.
I would give it 8 out of 10 if you know what you are getting into and are looking for a bit of blunt-force-trauma rather than brain-surgery. Worth a listen.
