Summary
Olivia Denis is hesitant to help an old family friend get ready for her wedding outside London. The so-called friend is a master at using people. As a young widow trying to find her way through a new romantic relationship, Olivia would rather avoid the large party.
She definitely didn't plan to find the bride's grandfather stabbed to death. The cruel, enormously rich aristocrat had changed his will only the day before, angering all his children.
But as Olivia is forced to investigate the murder, she's called away by her employer, the owner of an influential London daily newspaper. She must carry out another secret assignment, one that will take her to Vienna, now part of Nazi Germany.

Spoilt by linguistic incongruities
I could have enjoyed this novel. The story wasn’t bad, but it suffered from the same disadvantages as most of the others in this genre authored by American writers, ie jarring americanisms such as ‘sidewalk’ for pavement and ‘fall’ for autumn, to name but two of the usual suspects. Then there are the grammatical constructs - for example, Americans say ‘if I would have done…’ instead of the English ‘if I had done’ or ‘they had gotten…’ instead of ‘they had become..’ . If you’re going to write a book with an upper-class English setting in the first half of the 20th century, at least use appropriate language, Combined with the often eccentric pronunciation of some quite ordinary words by the reader, this rather spoiled the book for me.

Enjoyed the first book, but really didn’t like this
I really enjoyed the first book despite it being littered with very jarring Americanisms, but this book was in a completely different league. And not in a good way.
It felt like a bad Murder She Wrote. It also was extremely slow going and even the excellent narrator struggled with all the different accents - it was laughable at times.
Just like the first book, Americanisms were in abundance throughout. The writer could’ve picked any season - spring, summer, winter - but instead always chose “fall”, at least a dozen times, which in a very English-based book is extremely jarring.
The ending was bizarre too. All very odd. I can’t recommend this book in any way.
