Summary

Old gods die hard.

Professional necromancer Lazarus Kerrigan knows all too well that the Big Easy is anything but. Crime is up, business is down, and someone--or something--crushed an innocent girl to death on his doorstep.

After the search for the murderer brings the police to his front door, Laz must prove his innocence by hauling in the real killer with help from the dead.

When the sun sets in New Orleans, more than monsters go bump in the night... And what Laz awakens in his quest for answers might just get him--and everyone else in town--killed.

An enjoyable urban fantasy...

Laz is a necromancer. By day he runs a shop - trying to make ends meet. He's also been known to do the occasional seance, but his real abilities are much more powerful.
As Laz locks up shop one afternoon, he's approached by a young woman who wants his help. She says her life is in danger, and the source of the danger isn't of this world. On this occasion, however, Laz is about to go on a hot date....
Unfortunately, the next morning, the woman is found dead outside his shop, and its looking like Laz is the number one suspect. Laz needs to keep the police off his back, whilst he tries to figure out what happened, and just who has left this rather gruesome message on his doorstep...
A fun, supernatural tale - well told by Travis Baldree...

Thoroughly enjoyable opening for a new UF magical venture.

I was uncertain about this novel, tbh, as there are a number of magical UF series out there, at the moment, with wizards, gods, Fae and deathly creatures. But there is more than enough room for one more, as it turns out.

The characterisation began quite predictably, but then there was enough of a distinction from the usual tropes, and the performance of the narrator only helped with this, so that the book took on it’s own identity, in very short order.

There is a rich vein of magical lore that can be mined, in such a venture. We shall soon find out what the author settles upon for the next books (I hope!).

The story isn’t overly complex, but then again, it’s an introduction to a series, and it does so *very* well, whetting my appetite for more, by the end, so that I wanted to hear more, straightaway.

For me, that’s the job done - by writer and narrator, both. I will most certainly be following the magical adventures of Laz, Fourth Horseman, Pale Rider and hapless, hopeless wizard-cum-good-guy, who is not so powerful that he can’t get his ass handed to him, every so often.

A great opening to a series that holds a lot of promise. A solid four stars for me, edging upward.

Hear you soon, Laz! :)

Great Urban Fantasy

Ok, so I was still a little on the fence after listening to the sample, but thought I’d give it a go... and wow, am I glad I did.
Hooked from the first 5 minutes and kept up the intense pace throughout. What a great story and very well written.
Travis does an excellent job with all the characters and his voice fits perfectly with the setting; he sets the mood so well too, really pulling off the intensity of fight scenes etc.
Really hope there’s more to come from this pairing; loved it!!
