Der Fall erschien in Deutschland auch unter dem Titel Der einsame Radfahrer. Ein schwarzgekleideter Mann stellt Miss Violet Smith auf seinem Fahrrad nach. Und das in einer der einsamsten Gegenden der Charlington Heide. Immer exakt an der gleichen Stelle. So schnell er auftaucht, so schnell verschwindet er auch wieder. Die Gründe für sein Erscheinen bleiben dabei ebenso rätselhaft, wie seine Identität. Schließlich bittet die verunsicherte, ja, mittlerweile verängstigte Frau Sherlock Holmes um Rat. Dieser hält das Ganze jedoch für die harmlose Posse eines schüchternen Verehrers. Eine fatale Fehleinschätzung, wie Holmes bald erkennen muss...
